SALARY:
Current Contract: 1.800,000 (gross - before tax) 27 hours per week. Mon - Frid.
New Contract: I have a verbal agreement for 27 hours at 2.000,000 (2 mil) a month BEFORE tax. Working monday to friday only.
This is about 1.910,00 per pay. Is that OK. ???
2 mil is okay
TAX:
Current Contract: sais 4.5 % but they have been deducting 5 %.
Director sais he will refund the last .5 % in my final pay.
I see some contracts in seoul offer 3.3 % tax. I heard on TV that Korean Govt has reduced taxes. Any ideas???
New Contract: What rate of tax should I pay???
tax on 1.8 is 19,960 which is about 1.15% not anywhere near 5%
tax on 2 mil is 28,950 which is about 2.45%
Check your monthly withholding tax at http://nts.go.kr/front/service/refer_cal/gani/refer_gani_eng.asp
OVERTIME:
Current Contract is 16,000 per hour (on 1,800.000).
What's the rate for overtime on 2 mill (gross - before tax) per pay???.
I need to know the percentage eg., 3.3 %, 4.5 %, 5% ??
20,000 won per hour is a good overtime on a salary of 2 mil
UNUSED VACATION DAYS:
What's the daily rate for unused vacation days on 1.8 million (gross - before tax??) and 2 million (gross before tax). Working monday to friday.
I havent got a clue how to work this out.
1.8/20=90.000 won per day. They will want to divide it by 30(# of days in the month but dont let them) You dont work weekends!
VACATION
Current Contract: states '2 weeks paid vacation" But my school has only given me 3 days (Wed/thurs/frid) for summer vacation. I've worked nearly 10 months now.
New Contract: I want to stipulate 2 X five day vacations (summer and winter) in new contract. Is this feasible??
What sort of advance notice should they give me of holidays. I didn't have time to book airflights or get visas last time so spend my 3 days holiday in my apartment. I'm still fuming.
You should be the one booking the holiday time....IE let them know when you are taking your vacation time....they should have a school calendar and it should list all Korean holidays as well as any school holidays!
TERMINATION NOTICE
Currentl Contract: a minimum of 2 months notice.
New Contract: I want to change this to 1 month notice so I can apply for other school/uni jobs. Is this reasonable??
WORKING HOURS
Current Contract: I teach one or two classes till 10 or 10.30pm on regular basis (and it's killing me).
New Contract: I want to stipulate "no classes after 10pm" and change contract to read: "late classes (after 9.30pm) are to be negotiated with the Emloyee/teacher. Is this unreasonable??
I usually start at 4pm but they change this some months to 1.30pm or 2pm.
I would state the hours that you are willing to work. 2-9 or whatever. Any classes falling outside of these times will be paid out in overtime!
SICK DAYS
Current Contract: requires medical cert BEFORE i'm supposed to start class.
New Contract: I want to delete this clause as I always turn up (even when I'm sick) and I can't speak Korean so couldn't get a doctor in a hurry anyway.
Delete that clause. There is nothing wrong with providing a medical certificate the next day. If employee is sick they will notify the school asap and provide a doctors note.
LEGAL PROBLEMS
Current Contract: Has an unenforceable clause about prosecuting 'run way' teachers in other countries.
Is it worth deleting this type of rubbish??
They cant enforce it so dont worry about it....its just stupidity on their part!
Make sure you collect your severance at the end of the first contract...schools have a tendency to either forget about it or not wanting to pay it. |

| with one year of experience surely you can get a better contract elsewhere. I would go post on Worknplay get a few more offers, and ask for contracts. Bring them to your next meeting and see if they are willing to dicker then. |
