I'd have a problem with the Whites only hiring policies here. It makes up for affirmitive action and positive discrimination we get to deal with back home.

Zimbabwe has a Black only hiring policy. Pakistan has a Muslim only hiring policy according to Sharia law.

Wow, a whole 20 resumes you sent out and you didn't get a dream job. In the US, you need to send out 175 resumes just to start.

Why come? You know they will be rude and stupid to you. They will stare and make unkind comments and talk about you. Don't come..you have been honestly warned. Koreans don't change....and you won't change them. If you come, then remember it is for the money and live with the problems until you can go home.
It really won't be a good experience.

with all due respect, how the h*ll would you know that? not everyone hates it here ya know... stare? did you even read the post? he's ASIAN, they don't stare at other asians.

IMHO there are just alot of people here that will just be miserable anywhere... its not korea..

don't listen to people like this, some people have real bitter experiences here and they want everyone else to hate this place too.

speaking as a chinese canadian who works here, i can honestly say my experience has been more then good. its hard to find a job, there is definitly a preferance for a white face here, no doubt. but its not impossible nor is it sure to be horrible if you come.

how your experience in korea goes depends on you.

it depends on you doing your homework finding a GOOD school, i got lucky but many don't (i'm guessing bellum is one of them).
*SUPER IMPORTANT MAKES ALL THE DIFFERENCE IN THE WORLD

it depends on you to try to enter into the culture, learn the language, and not live solely in a tiny circle of bitter foreigners

it depends on your ability to adapt to change and to keep an open and unjudgemental mind

most of all it depends on you having a positive attitude and outgoing personality

what is your ethnicity? chinese? korean? japanese? that makes a difference (korean canadians get looked down on if they can't speak korean and japanese people are just plain hated here by alot (not all) of the koreans, espeically the older ones

from my experience, pros and cons of being asian as compared to white teachers are:

PROS:

-no staring, that bothers alot of my friends here (it might not seem like much but it can get real old real fast day in day out)
-you can blend in and go about your business without people coming up and bothering you for english lessons
-they are interested in your home culture (my experience anyways)
-dating korean girls will not attract the sometimes open hostility from the locals for you
-a deep understanding of the asian mindset and culture will put your start lightyears ahead of the avg westerner in the intercultural understanding thing
-if you speak chinese or japanese learning korean is ALOT easier, in fact, lots of words are identical with chinese and grammar is very close to japanese
-culture shock's no where near as bad (for me anyways, but i got extensive asia experiences)
-even though it is foreign here, in some strange way i feel more at home sometimes, walking down the street and seeing that everyone around you is asian like you, instead of white (not that i don't love canada's diversity, but just a gut feeling sometimes ya know? maybe its just me)
-if you are built like an average asian, cloths will fit you better here.

CONS:
-yep, they don't want to hire you
-they might even try to pay you less
-they might not treat you with the respect you deserve as a native teacher (which an't much to begin with hehe)
-you will have to explain that you are not korean like a bizillion times a day. i don't know how many f*cking times i've said 'na-nun chinguk-e canada-saram ieyo already, but its ALOT
-sometimes they expect you to speak korean/know what is going on, instead of treating you like the clueless foreigner that you are. can be annoying
-you don't get stared at, but at the same time you loss alot of the chances white foreigners have of meeting locals, cause they just come up and talk to them b/c they are white
-koreans can get very confused about you, but if you learn just some basic korean (and i mean FAST) its not so bad

best of luck. pm me if you want to ask anything else

Hi,

Interesting.

Just one thing about "chances white foreigners have of meeting locals", it's sometimes typical that local people are too shy, too cautious; they rarely approach me.

I think it is true, as someone posted on page one, that in order to alter the mindset there has to be exposure to multi-cultural living. I don't think 'Events' make culturalism a reality in people's mind, rather it's a gimmick when we people see our different skins just on the television.

Also, it's not gonna make any difference in local people's minds, if we live in these self-imposed 'foreigner-only' enclaves. Really, if anyone is serious about living with a semblence of reality, you really must break out from living in strange neighborhoods like those I have seen near Itaewon.

They can't because it takes money to live anywhere normal. The key money is crazy to live anywhere but stupid villas or "almost" apartments.

I'm East-Indian/Indo-Canadian as well and I didn't have too much of a problem. The school I'm currently working at is great. Yes I do get some racist remarks, etc from koreans but in general it's not so bad. Keep looking you'll find a job. Actually, I'm looking for a new teacher to replace my position at the end of January so if you're interested email me.
