You have many hiking spots and national parks (Jiri san, Sorak San...), Temples and ofther ancient buildings ( and no they are not the same... Thats like saying all european castles are the same...).

You had me convinced until the castle part. When I lived in Europe, I started to get sick of traveling to cities and looking at the churches, cathedrals, castles, big stone buildings, because after a while they all begin to look pretty similar. I much prefer smaller cities with more natural scenery. |

This summer I bought a car, thanks to a vey fortunate opportunity (thank you, kimchicowboy. ) and now I am trying to get out of town on most weekends.
I plan to see a lot of Korea. I have a long list of places, and am really interested to hear suggestions. I love the mountains here, and can't wait to go to the southwest and see the coast. I am also planning on Soraksan and the northeast coast, as well.
Having a car is like sprouting wings. On the other hand, public transport is cheap and ubiquitous (my students have tried to convince me that that is a Korean word ). I've driven around most of the United States (including several drives from Miami to Seattle and back, and Seattle to Fairbanks, Ak., etc.) Korea is a piece (a small peice) of cake by comparison.
By all means, see what is here- it really is geographically beautiful, if architecturally a bit, shall we say, redundant. |

Choosing the time to travel is the key to avoiding the hordes. The freedom to do that would depend entirely on your job. During my first 3 contracts in Korea I did not have the option to do that. This year I do and it's great. I can go to interesting places that aren't overrun with swarms of Koreans on their day off. Sweet. |

Not enough because of other priorities

Just my two cents. I've been here ten years and have been to most of those places and many, many more. It's better to save up and go elsewhere. But, you probably need to go to some of those places at least once so that you can know that for yourself.
By the way, like my photo of Seoul? |

I have travelled very much around this country...been all over all the provinces with the exception of maybe Jeollabukdo(been to only Jeonju and Daedunsan) and Gangwondo(been to only the lower east coast)..
I love travelling here...so cheap for accomodation and food, the public transportation is amazing and there always somewhere to drink....
Some of my best experiences here have been gathering a group of freinds and just geting out and enjoying the mountains...I have very fond memories of my travels here.. |

Yeah, going to the mountains and the temples with friends, eating a good meal of mountain mushrooms and vegetables, or searing dolsot bibimbop as the snow is starting to fall, and watching the Koreans, donned in everything from Everest gear to tight skirts and high heels clambering up the trails, that can be a well spent and remembered Sunday or weekend. I've got a cold this weekend, but I am thinking of someplace good for the next. |

Is this your first year here? I, and everyone I know, just about, was sick continually and severely my first year here. Now I seem to have a pretty rock solid immune system. I get the occasional cold, but fend it off pretty well. It's just adjusting to the new environment and its particular viral strains, etc. I hope you get better! |

I travelled every chance I got during my first year in Korea. A friend of my suggested that it's good preventitive medicine for a negative korean experience. And it was alot of fun checking out Gyeongju, Soraksan, Seoul, Panmunjeon, Cheju-island (on motorbikes) and tons of places in and around Pusan. I never found it at all boring or repetitive but then again I was (and probably still am) a pretty inexperienced traveller.
I just recently had the opportunity to have my mom visit my wife and I here in Korea and we went to alot of tourist locations. Some of them I hadn't visited since my first year (way back in '97) and I can say it's totally worth it to travel around Korea. You may find the architecture redundant but getting out to the tourist spots can show another side of Korea that many of us forget or neglect. Like my friend said years ago...it's a good way to prevent an overload of negative thoughts.
