I didn't realize that Incheon had grown that big.. I was thinking Incheon was 2 million and Busan about 6 million.. or at least it was about 4-5 years ago.. |
Those are the figures I was going by- Inchon's bigger than Pusan now?!?!?
Wow, where the heck did 4 million people come from in 4 years? Or did they redraw some municipal boundaries?
EDIT: I guess I should read to the end of the thread before posting a reply. Thanks for the stats Weatherman, although I'm surprised that Busan is under 4 million- I wonder if there has been a lot of movement out to the suburbs in the last few years. |

For what you seem to want though, faster pace, but some distance from Seoul, I might suggest Bucheon, between Incheon and Seoul on Line 1. I lived near Chungdong station, and I think it has a lot to offer. There's a very nice, big traditional market, a big park, department stores, nightlife districts near Bucheon and Songnae stations, and really nice kalbi restaurants with patio seating. In the summer, the Bucheon International Film and Animation Festival (PIFAN) also comes to town, which is one of the best chances to see experimental foreign films with English subtitles. Bucheon is a bit removed from Seoul, but Seoul is still easily accessible by subway, about 40 minutes, faster if you can catch the Yongsan express. By the same token, what Incheon does have to offer is also easily accessible by subway. I saw everything that Kate mentions about Incheon while I was living in Bucheon

Giving props to Bucheon, nice... But where is that traditional market you're talking about? Haven't come across that one. Not that I am really on the lookout for that kind of thing. |

Song Nae in the house!
After bouncing around seoul for a year and half, I loved this area so much.
Large streets and SIDEWALKS! omg. and even trees within viewing distance, and the people are all friendly, but i think thats because my korean was near perfect by that time so i could converse regularly
anyway, if going out to party every night is not a priority for you, I highly recommend Song Nae, 2 stations away from Bucheon |

Yeah, I have some pretty fond memories of my year in Bucheon. Good friends, good times, and lots of booze and grilled meat.
The traditional marketplace is called chung-dong shi-jang (ߵ ), and it's near Chung Dong subway station. From there go out the main exit to the main road, cross the street and make a left. You'll pass a McDonald's and a kim bap restaurant with a plastic pig in front of it. You'll know it when you see it and smell it. If you have any trouble finding it from Chung Dong Station just ask any Korean in the neighborhood.
If you've already been to Dongdaemun or Namdaemun market, you won't really be seeing anything new here. However, I used to live right next to it, it was the first thing I saw in Korea aside from the airport, my apartment, and a kalbi restaurant, so it made a really strong impression on me. I saw 8-foot octopus tentacles being cut with hacksaws, my first bundeggi stands, live cows ready to be slaughtered at the butcher shop, exotic fruits and vegetables, really good deals on all kinds of stuff, and the constant rhythm and energy that comes with Korean commerce. It was a really cool thing to have in my neighborhood. I miss it! |
