I really didn't mean for my question about impenetrable Aussie slang to distract everyone from a discussion of a serious issue. I've gotten this far in life without even hearing the expression, much less needing to understand it. Chances are I can go a few more years without suffering any debilitating loss.
Back to the issue at hand, please.
Right after 9/11 there were some reports of 'ethnic'-looking people in the US getting attacked, but I don't recall crowds of 5,000 people wandering the streets attacking folks. This sounds rather serious to me. |

Unfortunately there's a long history of larrikinism and hoonish behaviour in the Australian history and psyche. Manlyboys got it right though the Lebanese gangs are well known for being violent thugs. Just as much as the Australian skinheads who were rousting support for the "mass mobilisation"

Apparently it started as a street party to show support in response to the bashing of some life gaurds on the beach previously.
The numbers reported are well below 5000 though I'm hearing 400 on the ABC. It may well be that the original crowd was of a higher number, but the hardcore yobbos were a lot less.

This link gives a good overview of the incident.
But off the top off my head.
1) The war on 'terra'. A general vilification of Muslims, and a cultivation of a us vs them mentality by Howard and the media including Sydney talk back radio. Including highly publicised events like gang rapes by a lebanese gang,
2) Australian youths, like most anywhere, are looking for trouble and excitement and can fall into a mob mentality just like anyone else in LA,
Paris, and any given Soccer match.
3) White supremacists using the incident to incite trouble.
4) Australians have enough redneck d!kheads given to knee jerk reactions as anywhere else.
PS
Skip is an ethnic term for an anglo Australian.
Meditteranean people were migrating to Australia after WW2 and the racial term of abuse given out by the white australians was 'wog'. They retaliated with "Skip". I was always assumed it was an Australian equivalent of 'whitebread' derived from the TV show Skippy the Bush Kangaroo. |

Riots 'revenge' for Bali
http://www.theage.com.au/news/national/riots-revenge-for-bali/2005/12/12/1134235977964.html
Rioting at Cronulla Beach in Sydney is revenge for the Bali bombings and the September 11 attacks, federal Liberal backbencher Bruce Baird says.
Mr Baird, whose Cook electorate takes in many of the south eastern Sydney suburbs affected by a wave of violence at the weekend, said tensions had been simmering within the primarily Anglo-Saxon community against people of Middle Eastern descent for some time.
He said many locals were angry, particularly after six women from the area were killed in the 2002 Bali bombings.
"Where this riot took place is actually the site of where we've got the Bali memorial for these women," Mr Baird told ABC Radio.
Asked if the riots were revenge for Bali and September 11, Mr Baird said: "I think so." |

| I wonder, when Aboriginals are rioting against white Australians, whether they have "We grew here, you sailed here" painted on thier backs? |
