I think the Economist figured this whole thing out exactly when in their editorial about this last week, they called it a reason why science and nationalism don't mix.
Isn't it strange that The Island, a movie that completely bombed back in the states, was the #2 foreign movie at the box office for 2005 (not sure if King Kong beat them in the last week). It seems that Koreans have assumed an identity of being the "clone experts", and so now everyone has to go learn about it by watching The Island.
Anyway, I for one couldn't be happier to see clone boy fall flat on his face. Whenever Koreans get riled about about something and turn it into a nationalist "we're #1" issue, I pray for it to fall apart like a Chinese motorcycle. My secret wet dream is for a UN Resolution proclaiming Japanese sovereignty over Dokdo. |

Which is odd, because that move was decidedly ant-cloning. |

I think I saw that movie, but didn't it have a different title?

Ha ha!! Me too! And I would give North Korea to the Chinese, since they are half commies (on paper at least) they can help NK to transition better than big bad capitalist SK.
about hwang...what a tragedy I was out of the country, but it was a joy to read and talk about....the same reason most of you said...
my students told me every time..."because koreans use METAL chopsticks!" (not because only a handful of countries are allowed to do these procedures)....hub of this, hub of that.....it was just nationalism, wrapped in hubris, inside of deaf ears...and the whole WE DID THIS....
....it's nice to see them knocked down a peg.
ALSO! It seems that Wisconsin-Madison has done what Hwang could not....its derived two human embryonic stem cell lines.
It's because we use knives and forks which allow for greater wrist dexterity and forefinger strength! LONG LIVE U of WISCONSIN MADISON!!! HUB OF THE WORLD!!! |
