I would use butt in front of my grandmother.

I always taught them 'butt', occasionaly 'patootie'. They always liked that one. "I'm gonna kick yer patootie if ya don't sit down!" For some reason they always laughed at that one.

BTW, what do you guys do when they ask you the word for certain other body parts?

I had an all boy middle school class that wanted to know, that was no problem to teach, actually that was a fun day, but when the little youngsters ask I usually act like I have no idea what they are talking about. Until they start drawing pictures. Then I tell them to ask their mom.

I have actually been known to give minimal-pairs pronunciation lessons on "a fertile female dog"/beach and peanuts/"male external genitalia". To elementary school kids. It's the name of the part a boy uses to go to the bathroom. It's important to be able to talk about it.

Bottom is what I tell the kids to say. Hip is just stupid.

Butt is silly.

For adults I say it is more polite to say 'backside', with friends they can just say 'arse'.

Koreans are used to using different vocab in different situations.
