In a previous thread, a recruiter had some great war stories. The one that sticks out was a guy who sent a photo of him with a Korean woman in his lap.

At my tax software company in Toronto, I remember two clueless candidates. One was a bit late to the interview. He was lost. He called asking for directions. The receptionist wasn't providing him perfect directions and the guy started screaming at her. You know tax software is pretty high pressure with long hours and utterly drop dead deadlines. If you can't handle being lost... So yeah, she told the HR guy and, amazingly, the guy didn't get the job.

And then there was another guy who kept hitting on the receptionist before and after his interview. Again, a quick word to the HR guy.

Why can't people figure out the receptionist isn't a firewall? She'll happily pass on any negative impressions she has of you.

On the flip side, our VP once got it into his mind we needed a QA manager. Sure. We did. However, our cheap ass software company didn't want to add head count. The VP had about $35,000 in his budget for a hire. He brought in some guy for an interview. The guy's track record was gold. MA in something or another. Loads of work experience. The guy was totally pumped and knew he was a shoe-in for the job. Then it went like this:

Mr Golden: What is the salary range for this job? (thinking he's worth $65K but he'll settle for $60K)

VP: $32,000 with a bump up to $35,000 after 3 months.

Mr. Golden didn't say another word. He simply stood up and walked out of the interview. The VP did nothing but waste this poor guy's time.

Going back to the resume issue, I realize recruiters like to look at one pagers. However, I'm having trouble fitting it all one page. This is probably because I've had several different people give me advice. I had someone suggest putting down junior high and high school information as proof that English *is* your native language, etc though that seems to waste much space =)

Though I have zero ESL teaching experience or teaching experience, I've held several jobs at top Science institutions in the US and published a couple papers in Computer Science. Does that help to prove my competency in English and reflect well with the universities or do recruiters just not care about such things? Before the beration comes flying this way, I do realize I don't have a stellar resume for ESL, but I'm just wondering what helps and doesn't help for a person with no ESL experience. =) Any suggestions are appreciated!!! Thanks!

Don't bother with the high school or junior high school. Also, don't bother with the published papers not pertaining to ESL (in any way, though sometimes computer science and ESL link up, unlikely though). Wink
