Of course couples working together can sometimes work out, but sometimes it doesn't, and when it doesn't, it can be REALLY BAD. Make sure you are in a mature and serious relationship before you do this. I currntly work with an immature and dysfunctional couple who bring their personal problems to work on a daily basis and it has caused a lot of problems for the staff. This couple also enjoys sitting on each other's lap in the staff room and feeding each other, among other ridiculous things, so use discredtion and common sense!
Working at the same school can bring on problems you wouldn't have to deal with back home. The female component of the couple at my school was causing a lot of headaches around the school and was generally not a satisfactory teacher. Rather than speak to her directly about the situation, my male director will only speak to her boyfriend about it - "tell XXX not to do this, tell XXX she might get fired", etc. With the rest of us single girls, if the director needs to say something, he goes to us. I don't know if this is normal in Korea because this is my first job here, but you don't want a male director seeing your boyfriend as the only one he needs to deal with. |

This is true in most cases. In the beginning, if they needed something said or something done from my wife, they would come to me about it. After some grooming, as in most relationships, they started to go to her about her business. Just takes a little time and understanding. My wife isn't my property, she is my other half. |

| One of the bigger Haggies here on the island tries to only hire couples--as they forbid their foreign teachers to date Koreans, and promptly fire teachers if they hear that their teachers are dating Koreans. Quite well known policy, suprising no one has taken them to court. |
Wow! That is amazing. Is that really the reason they only hire couples?? If so, how did you find out?? I'm not disagreeing with you -- in fact I totally believe it but I'm just wondering how they would have revealed this or how it would have been discovered. |

Thanks so much for everyone's insight and advice. We are hoping to find positions available starting in July or August, because my husband will ideally be applying to and be accepted into at least one graduate school to start August 2007.
Someone had mentioned foreigners dating Koreans as a no-no in some areas. It brought up another concern we had. I have been told by some people that if you are Korean or Asian-looking it may be harder for you to find a position. I was born in Korea but was adopted when I was a few months old, so there isn't anything Korean about me except the way I look. Is there as much discrimination based on appearance as I have been told (either by nationality, or other factors)? (Sorry to be off topic -- I still can't create new topics, or I would put this in a new thread!)
Thanks. |

Yes, there is some. Simply refuse to accept it in the workplace in any form whatsoever.
Someone above mentioned a hogwan that wouldn't allow employees to date Koreans. I can't believe what kind of spineless idiot would possibly tolerate that. |

Yes it is extremely difficult to find English teaching jobs here as an Asian person. However if you speak Korean, they might want to hire you on the basis that you can communicate with the students in Korean. I have seen job postings for Korean American teachers. On the other hand, most school don't want to employ Asians. Most schools only get foreign teachers for their looks anyway. Being an Asian person myself, my current school only employed me out of a real emergency. My director told the parents that it was only a temporary solution. The parents had a lot of complaints about me not being white, and my director said this is the "mood" of Korea. I was also lied to before when I was looking for jobs. I was told by some schools that being Asian I won't be able to get a working visa. They also make assumptions that if you are not white you can't possibly be a native English speaker. |

That is the exact reason that I was told some workplaces tend to discriminate against Asian-looking people. Hopefully it won't be too difficult to find positions for us. Based on what everyone has said I think we will start applying for positions much sooner than we had planned.... |
