As for my whole legality issue, have many teachers been caught? What's the penalty? Is there a way I can register these shools myself? What would happen if I step forward to immigration and explain what's happening? I really like it here, and would love to continue teaching. This should probably be another thread or something, and I'm sorry if it should be and I'm bringing it up here.

1. Yes, people have been caught. And your chances of getting caught are much higher as you are working in other schools instead of doing privates. People snitch, and theres a reward for turning in illegals. 3 million won. Also, immigration does raid schools to catch illegal workers.

2. The fines run into millions of won and deportation.

3. You cant register them yourself because you need proper documentation to register a school. Perhaps you could approach the schools but you would still need permision from your boss (or pimp) to register a 2nd place of employment as he is your sponsor.

This is one horrible contract you have, header. If I were you, I'd get a trusted Korean friend to make some calls and find out what would happen to you if you were to report it. If you'd receive no penalties and it would terminate your contract, that may be an easy way to get out of the nightmare and find a position that's worth having.

Good luck, whatever you do.

Stop working at those other locations immediately!

I wouldn't recommend telling Immigration what you've been doing, as that's basically tantamount to turning yourself in for working illegally and possibly subjecting yourself to heavy fines and/or deportation. Your boss(es) won't like this one little bit, but the smartest thing you could do would be to refuse to work at the additional locations until you get this sorted out. You may have signed a contract that requires you to work at other locations at your boss' discretion, but remember that no contract that requires you to do something illegal is enforceable.

Here is a pretty good thread about adding additional locations to your E2visa: http://www.eslcafe.com/forums/korea/viewtopic.php?t=23466&highlight=

I totally agree with Son Deureo! If you get caught teaching illegally, (which IS what you're doing, even though your boss may tell you otherwise!!) it could affect future jobs in Korea. We recently had a guy who applied for a postion here and because 2 years ago he got caught teaching illegally (with the full knowledge of his employer...who set up the job for him!) he almost didn't get the job here because immigration wouldn't approve his visa!! DON'T...I repeat DON'T work at any other location unless it's on your ARC...unless you don't care if you get deported, or if you don't care if you ever want to work in Korea again.

Because you're new here, your boss might try to get away with as much as possible, but DON'T LET HIM!

Where are you located? PM me if you need some ideas about how to handle the situation. I've worked at the worst AND the best hagwons, plus two different unis...[/b]

do not - i repeat - do not tell immigration that you are doing jobs outside your visa stipulations. this is tantamount to walking into the den of the lion...you cannot trust them to sympathise with your situation, even if it's clearly not your fault. they are pencil pushing bureaucrats and will thank you for turning yourself in so they dont' have to do the work.

the kind of privates that you are doing are the most dangerous kind: ones commissioned by your E2 boss. dangerous because catching teachers doing on the sly work is like finding a needle in a haystack for immigration. hogwans are already on immigration's radar so those haystacks are where they look first. and equally important, there is a paper trail which leads to your real identity which makes busting you easier.

the safe way: invent a working name and work under it. never never EVER show anyone that isn't going to issue you a visa (or agree to be added to your existing E2) ANYTHING with your real name on it. that means passports, degrees, ARC. recruiters that fill private jobs know that what they are doing is not on the up and up with immi so they will understand when you refuse. nonetheless, they will try to get these things from you. after a fight they will hire you and your pseudonym anyway.

lastly, get paid in cash - no bank account wires.
