I agree. I rode all the way up north and across the bridge onto the mainland and found a beach that had no one on it. It was great.

How many people go to Phuket and never leave Patong/Karon/Kata and, if they do go anywhere else, just visit Phuket town? It's a big island and, in my opinion, has lots for everyone.

I like it. I'm not so sure I would recommend getting on a bike because driving in Thailand can be a hair-raising experience if you aren't used to it but that's a great way to explore Phuket.

Dos anyone know the statistics on the number of foreigners who die on bikes every year on Phuket or Samui - or in Thailand? I bet it's a lot.

Jeep (or the Isuzu equivalent) rentals I thought were extremely reasonable. And you can't really get lost, at least not for very long. I've seen too many accidents in the Caribbean with tourists on scooters/motorcycles to recommend it.

OP, if you want cinemas, shopping and food courts then why not camp out on a mall?
We spent two nights in Kata, more than enough for me. Grotesque hotels, seedy bars, and a proliferation of middle-aged Germans. Not my dream holiday. Got out quick and spent rest of time on Phi Phi at the totally isolated Ao Koh Toh beach which we heard of via word of mouth. It turned out to be the most friendly, chilled and generally best beach resort ive ever been to.
