I've been to Brazil four times. The longest I stayed there was a month and I almost moved there two years ago. I was even engaged to a Brasileira.

I've traveled to more than forty countries and Brazil was probably my favorite. The beauty and warmth of the place was just phenomenal. And the women...

That being said, I'd probably never go down there again if I didn't have a significant other there. I certainly would never consider moving there now. After the "love" phase dissipates and reality settles in, you'll see that it's a deeply troubled country and Brazilians, while initially friendly, would be willing to scam you.

A lot of gringos really fall in love with the passion of the place and especially the women. Considering how cold Western society is comparing to Latin America, it's really easy to see why so many people are crazy about Brazil. But much of Brazil is a fantasy and dream. Most people there are pretty miserable as the country is so poor and they have limited opportunities to escape their poverty. When you venture out of the touristy areas and experience life like most Brazilians do (I always stayed in Vila Formosa in Sao Paulo's Zone Leste, which is not a nice area at all. Honestly, most of Sao Paulo is a dump), then it's a different experience.

Add the danger of the place and corruption and it doesn't seem all that appealing. I'm amazed to see how individual Brazilians survive and deal with the everyday troubles surrounding them. It's not a surprise that so many Brazilians are desperate to leave. They don't see anything changing for the better (and Brazilians have themselves to blame for not really doing anything about it) and don't hold much hope for the future.

Oh, and a lot of the women in Rio are really men who had sex changes. You have to be careful. And be careful at some of the clubs, especially Help. Lots of prostitutes working there. Anyone ever been to Help? Aside from the trannys and hookers, it's supposed to be the biggest club in Latin America.

Great post! I'll comment as well.

I had a great time there as well. But I long thought that I'd never take a Brazilian woman seriously. I know there are plenty of good ones down there. But I met quite a few who had a lot of boyfriends. I mean like a boyfriend #1, boyfriend #2, and more than willing to add you as boyfriend #9. It's cool and all, but to take a girl like that seriously, ahmm...not a good place to look for something serious. An incredibly place to just have light-hearted fun though.

My best interpretation of Brazil, was the women were like men. They went after men like men go after women everywhere else in the world. If you sit down at the bar, and start talking to the girl, she'll be just as pleased as if a western guy had had a woman approach him in a bar.

HELP! Club. I lived down the street from there on Copocabana Beach. It was essentially all freelancer girls that go to dance and look for gringos who'll pay to take them home. I found that as the sun went down, just about every woman walking around Copocabana Beach was usually a prostitute. They don't look like it, they look like just normal people, but they'll wink and flirt and try to attract you. They will flirt often with people eating in the many street cafes. If you invite them down to sit with you, they'll quickly call a half dozen of their friends, order everything they can get away with and expect you to pay for it. Saw it happen over and over and over while living in Rio.

I lived in both Rio and Sao Paulo during my six months in Brazil. Copocabana in Rio, and Pinheiros in Sao Paulo.

I'd agree with you when it comes to Brazilian women. I wouldn't trust them for a long-term relationship. I've seen a lot of gringos heartbroken from them. I know this one British dude over in Sao Paulo and he's dating this girl over there. This girl has two kids from a previous marriage and it's obvious that she's using him to be the daddy because the Brazilian dad didn't want to be a father (which is very common over there). Anyways, this girl cheated on him with another guy and got pregnant. The kid is from the guy she cheated with, but the British dude is such a moron and has such low self-esteem that he won't leave her and he'll take care of the kid.

I guess you can't really blame her because he's the one who's naive and stupid and he probably knows what's going on, but...

I had my issues with Brazilian girls in the past too, but even after my ex and I broke up, I wanted nothing but Brazilian girls. I eventually grew out of that phase after meeting my last girlfriend, who was much better and actually did things for me instead of making promises she didn't keep (very common in Brazil as they have a tendency to say things they don't mean).

Anyways, I know some guys here in New York who are all married to young Brazilian women they met online (they even made a club called the "Brazilian wives club"). All of them are in their mid-30's or older. One of the couples has a 20 year age difference -- the girl is 26 and the guy is obviously in his mid-40's. The girls don't really do much and the guys do just about everything around the house -- work, cook, clean, support them. Some of the girls have jobs, but not all of them. I don't know what the basis of these relationships is, but the guys seem really happy. And I'm sure the girls are really happy to be out of Brazil.

I've never been there but it sounds like fun for sure. Incidentally, my brother is married to a Brazilian girl. I think he has never been there either, met her in Canada. I've never met her but another brother says her English isn't great. Yet another brother (I have 6 of them) joked (?) that she just wanted to be a Canadian resident.

Wow, in my experience Brazilian women are pretty loyal. Sure their culture is more open about sex but I would trust a Brazilian woman any day over a Korean woman...by a LONG SHOT...not to mention they make the majority of Korean women look like pre-pubescent boys.

Still my most favorite country.

I haven't yet been to the Nordeste - Fortaleza, Maceio, Recife/Olinda, Natal, etc.

Would love to go on a vacation and just spend it in that area.

Brazilian women and German women are a breed apart - If they like you, they will just go on over - none of this coy stuff! Laughing

I like Brazil but living there? I don't think I could do that to be honest. I prefer Argentina being a so so Spanish speaker, and there are a lot more opportunities to make a living teaching English there.

Haven't been there for awhile myself but the Brazilian economy is blowing away Argentina. I would think there would be better opportunity now to make money but that is just my opinion based economic growth. If you know Spanish, Portuguese would be pretty easy to pick up.

I can't wait to head back there. A place I told my friends to visit was Fernando de Noronha. Most Brazilians I talked to said it was the most beautiful place in Brazil. My friend who has traveled a lot agreed it was probably the most beautiful place he had been to.

Man......... I miss the women!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I had always wanted to go see the carnavale in Rio & did just that a few years back. It was fabulous & everything you'd expect....bright, colourful, noisy....

When we first arrived it was exciting to hear the parades & party-goers outside your window quite literally 24 hours a day. A few days later you were lying in bed at 3.30am with your pillow over your ears just wishing they'd shut the beep up!! Laughing

When we went up to see the christ the redeemer statue Arnold Schwarzenegger (how ever you spell it) was also up there having a look see surrounded by scary looking body guards! This was back about 7 years ago.

On our way across to Bolivia we went to some dodgy 'safari camp' out in the Pantanel where we swam with alligators & went fishing for pirhana....the place was a complete rip-off but all a big adventure at the time.

Have to say I much preferred Bolivia - people are friendlier & you don't feel like you're getting ripped off all the time & the lifestyle is more relaxed, but Brazil is agood place to visit for a while.

Go see the carnavale in Feb if you're going to make the effort - lot's of fun! Bring ear plugs though. Wink

But on a side note yes the women are stunning! The average woman just walking down the street would look right at home alongside any of the so-called 'supermodels'.
