If your students are in blazers and ties and you're in jeans and a T-shirt, what does it say about the level of respect you'll cammand?

well, actually it would probably be jeans, collared shirt, jacket. I don't think it would affect the level of respect at all. I think it's laughable to think a teacher that is wearing jeans won't get respect from the students. A teacher that commands respect in class is going to get whether he/she is wearing jeans or a business suit.

If you're a woman at a public school, uin, or business school you *might* be able to get away with this. Not a guy, especially if it's blue jeans we're talking about. This is Korea and man in jeans =/= real hakyo sungsaengnim.

The dress issue does matter a lot in Korea, so evaluate why you are here. If you are here to do your year teaching kids go for comfort especially for kindergarten.

If you are teaching adults though even a cheap suit goes a long way here. I dressed casually initially but when I changed to wearing a suit, I got more work and the bank manager even approached me in the bank asking me if I wanted a credit card. Initially he had told the casually dressed me foriegn teachers could not even get an international debit card. The crazy thing was I think my tie cost more than my suit.

One final comment is when I wear jeans they tend to make my bum look big (not years of drinking and eating with no exercise).
