For me, KL is about as classy as a city as you can find. Safe, clean, great architecture (colonial with an islamic twist) and like Tiger Beer says, very interesting to see so many cultures mixed in. Also, Malaysia is quite modern, with a really modern transportation system (including highways) so it is really easy to get anywhere you want to go. Also, because there are so many cultures in KL, be ready to get your a$$ kicked by the awesome food, it will blow you away.

If there were more, and better, ESL jobs there, I would be there in an instant. You can even play hockey in KL.

What about the resorts areas in Malaysia of Penang and Langkawi? Plenty of tour packages abound with travel agencies here to those two locations.

I'd vote Jakarta, but I am biased. As regards worse English, Jakarta by a nose as Malaysia is a former British colony, but you will be amazed at the level of English proficiency in Indonesia. What everyone has said about the nightlife is true, plus the city has probably the best music scene in Asia outside of Japan. You just have to know where to look for it. Price would be a factor too, you can rent a kost (one room apt) in Kemang for around 300 a month with aircon, cable and often ADSL connection. Transport is a bit of a pain in the rear, but the new busway services the town from Glodok in the North to Blok M in the south and there is soon to be a new east west one as well. Taxis are dirt cheap, for example last time I stayed in Kemang and a taxi to my sister in laws place in the far eastern suburbs is a little under 10 bucks. Jakarta is grittier, edgier and more earthy but that is another plus in my book. Oh yeah, and what people said about the girls, you'll be chasing them away with a sh1tty stick before too long. I've spent a lot of time there in the last few years, so PM me if you want specifics.

music scenes.. Philippines way before Japan and Indonesia!

Also I'd put Indonesia before Japan.

Most of the music scene in Japan comes from either western bands touring or Filipinos hired to play music.. from the Japanese itself.. its much better than anywhere else in Asia.. but the average filipino/indonesian generally takes natural music talent way on to another level well past the Japanese.

Music 'scenes' is debateable though.. highly debateable.. as of course Japan is bringing it all in from elsewhere.

Just talked with a buddy who has been to Malaysia quite a few times, and he said it's only good if you're with family or something. I was planning on going to Penang or Langkawi but he said it's not the best for a single guy unless one is really into water sports.

I think perhaps Myanmar might be a better destination.

Penang is worth checking out. Well the city that is. I wouldn't say it's a prime spot for the beach.

I think I'll delay visiting Malaysia in favor or either Jakarta or Bali. I'm only off for a week and will try to cram in fun as much as possible.

Guess the Indonesian earthquake will probably make people think twice about Java or anything nearby, eh? Hope things settle down over there.

Well, I'm moving to Jakarta, 250 miles away and unaffected, earthquakes rarely happen that bad over and over again.
