Yeah, no one in Asia would want a Japan rearming itself. However much many Americans would bitch about America paying so much to defend Japan and the Japanese weren't carrying their weight, all things considered, it kept the region stable. China and Japan's other neighbors didn't fear a nuclear armed Japan. Yes, there were American troops there but they couldn't exactly mount a land war. Everyone understood they were a trip wire. Kill a lot of those Americans and you're in trouble, but hordes of Japanese and American troops aren't suddenly going to pour into Malaysia.

In sum, America got value for its money. A stable East Asia churning out a lot of consumer products Americans like.

Lot of those bets are off these days.
