I just started to boycott eating in the lunch room this past week. I now go to a little kim bab restaurant next to the school and eat some denjon jiggae for the big price of 3,000 won. My school lunch would cost around 2,000 so the extra chun won isn't killing me. I can't tell you how much better I feel and how much stress I can relieve with a quiet lunch hour. I don't know about you guys, but just walking down the hallway can be irritating with all the kids saying hello teacher! I need down time and I don't miss those akward lunches with teachers who can't speak English and look a bit uncomfortable. In addition I agree with you crazylemongirl the food isn't good or healthy.

I'm done. I'm glad I'm not alone on this one..

I must be saying "Hello" or "What's up?" at least 100 times a day while
cruising the corridors and using the stairwells at my high school. I don't
know what's more tiring, that or actually teaching. Cool

Supervisor? What's that?

I second that!

I agree. Being sensitive to Korean customs is one thing, but this is going too far. Sure it seems like the end of the world to them that you left the table early, but surprisingly, life goes on. Once they get used to it and accept you for who you are, your relationship with them will be a lot healthier.

Consider the alternative. You agree to abide by their rules. As time goes by, you become more and more frustrated and eventually explode and quit your job. How does this help build better cultural understanding?

Anyway, the next westerner they come into contact with will also make the same 'mistake'. They should start coming to terms with it.

I'd eat lunch with them again, but this time say, "Gotta go" and leave abruptly.

I fourth it.

Ignore these people, eat your lunch and go when you want.

I have been in public schools for a long time, and never heard of this custom...leaving the table together...pffftttt.

ְ 弼 will suffice as you are leaving. It's polite and what everyone else does.
