Most people who vote "yes" probably won't even be Canadian !!!!
Many misunderstand the relationship Canadians have with America. Very few fellow Canucks actually hate America or Americans.
Though there's no love lost with the Bush administration and U.S. federal government in general. |

Of course not.
But the ones who do are the ones you remember.
A few years ago, I took two new teachers from the hagwon I was working at to lunch to welcome them to the school. One was Canadian; the other was Scottish. During the course of the conversation, someone mentioned that the actor Michael Moriarty changed his citizenship from the USA to Canada because he didn't like the US government (felt he was being censored on TV). The Canadain said, "Good. I like him. I hate Americans." I said something like you do? and she said again that she hated Americans. |
Those kind of people are from the land of Morons first, and whatever nationality is just an afterthought. If it wasn't Americans it'd be something else. Immigrants or something, probably |

Canadians in Korea provide koreans with the perfectly convenient way to learn American English without being seen to be sucking up to the USA.

Like I posted on the the other Canada - America question.
A large percentage of teachers in Korea are strange/weird/freaks. A large percentage of the teachers are Canadian. Don't not judge the average Canadian by the average teacher in Korea, they truly do not represent the majority. Most Canadians like Americans or don't really care what they think about Canadians and Canada. |
You know I'm glad you said that, I was really beginning to think that every Canuck I'd meet was gonna be strange, but on balance, 99.9% of them have been in Korea.Although, I met two outside of K. and boy did they hate me for my nationality. |

Indeed.
Why some people persist in wanting to stir up bad feelings i have no idea
Hate is such a strong & extreme word. All too toxic & rife with perils.
Moreover, one need always make an important distinction between the vast array of "Americans" / CHINESE / FRENCH / RUSSIANS / BRITS / DEMOCRATS / SOUTHERNERS / OTHERS per se ( think we could get any more general? ) and the function of the state as an institution spawning, among other things, oppressive legislative policies. |

We're on a topic that's been done to death, but I'll explain why I think it keeps returing as a thread.
It's obvious that Americans like myself, Plig, Ya-ta, Abbe Faria, and Richard here, and many others, were shocked when we first came to Korea.
That is, we were expecting one kind of culture shock, but the shock of the extremely bitter and callous antiAmericanism coupled with arrogant pretentions to moral superiority by so many Canadians (in places of employment, in bars, and on this board) took us totally by surprise, made a powerful impression, and thus the reaction of threads like these.
I have met Canadians who do not hold such bitter views, and many on this board protest that when we complain about this, we are unfairly painting all Canadians with the same brush. And they are right. As for me, Bulsajo, Laogaiguk, Urban Myth, and others have made particularly strong impressions that this is so.
But on the other hand, the moralizing, etc., is not going away either. Peppermint, for example, in the midst of an immigration crisis in the U.S. quotes/needles "all nations get the immigrants they deserve" in her signature.
So unfortunately, as long as new Americans arrive in Korea, this issue will continue to reappear, even though nothing will really change, and, as Kuros says, these threads do not show us anything new. |

Dude, America is not the center of the universe, that's been my sig for a while now, and I put it there thinking of Korea. Being so hypersensitive can't be good for your blood pressure. |

Well, it's good to see someone else recognizing this for a change.

So your question as I read is asking if Canadians living in South Korea hate America
No,
not me anyway hating literally dozens of countries in North America, Central America and South America would be ridiculous.
Oh silly me, th OP really means "do Canadians living in Korea hate the USA"
No,
It would be nice however if people referred to the USA as the USA because "America" refers to a huge chunk of the earth spanning many countries, cultures, languages beliefs and the like. |

Most of my friends here ARE Americans. Don't see what the problem is.
The more we generalize, the more misguided and off-base our conclusions tend to be.
America is fine. AmeriKan state legislative tyranny, military imperialism & corporate corruption are what most naturally take exception to.

What country adjective do you suggest be used for people from the USA?
USAnian? United Statian? Southern Canadian?
This is always such a petty, stupid 'discussion' (almost as bad as the proper English - British vs American - debate). I already wish I had the will power not to rise to the chum. |

Gypsyfish,
US Citizens would likely suffice.
Just a pet peeve of mine I guess, maybe petty in some minds but seems to be a bit of a generalization to call one country america when the term is actually used to describe a mass of countries. |

I understand your POV, but (and you didn't say this) it's not like US citizens chose to call themselves Americans, or, if they did, it was chosen a long time ago and it wasn't done to co-opt the name America or demean other people from Canada, Chile, Brazil, or Peru.
It's a shorthand; it's easier to say I bought an American car than I bought a car that was manufactured in the USA.
I'm sensitive to the fact that some people from the Americas don't like it, so, when asked where I'm from, I answer the USA. Eight times out of ten, the person I tell responds, "Oh, America."
I also understand why Canadians don't like to be asked where in America - meaning the USA - they come from. Maybe the first couple of times it's easy to laugh off, but eventually it starts to wear thin. But why get mad at people from the USA about it (unless it was a US citizen that asked)? I've heard Canadains say things like I would never be from that country like it's an insult. I've even had a couple students tell me that that was the reaction they got when they asked. Get mad at the person who asked, not the country they confused you with. (I'm not preaching to you, inspector, just venting my spleen.) |
