| I vaguely recall that Tiger Woods refused an invitation for a White House function (honoring some famous black athlete, I think...) when Bill Clinton was residing there. (Possibly wanted to show solidarity with wealthy Republicans...) |
Haha.
Tiger Woods won tournaments before he was invited. He probably gets invited to everything and has no time to accept them all. Michelle Wie hasn't won any yet and probably accepted the invitation because she wants all the publicity she can get for 'her career' and she and her family are the naive, grasping sort, that will gobble up any attention. Eg. Supposedly she can speak Japanese, this is the spiel about her, just because she went to Japan and made a couple of ads there, but if you saw the ads, you can see she speaks Japanese in the ads with an atrociously strong American accent and I think one can safely assume she does not know Japanese any better than you or me (or the average non-Japanese person out there).
I don't want to make out I have anything against Michelle Wie because I don't. I just don't think she is all that great stuff and I think she is going to turn out to be a disappointment.
Off-topic: An interesting thing I noticed about this thread (and I've made this comment before) is that when there is some positive news about a Korean/Korean American etc, such as a Korean American coming to Korea to play; also Korean sports successes eg Olympics), it gets buried in the Off Topic section. (Note how the news about famous bands coming to play in Korea gets posted in the General Discussion forum, or when a team beats Korea in baseball etc)
When the topic changes to something less than positive, for example, a discussion about her father and his comments to the media about Michelle being a Korean and his alleged nationalism http://www.eslcafe.com/forums/korea/viewtopic.php?t=56020, it turns up in the General Discussion forum. It might mostly be subconscious but I perceive this posting pattern might be indicative of (and one of the numerous examples of) a general bias against Koreans in Dave's. |

The media hype about Michelle Wie is just the latest manifestation of it. |
Well for all your dissing of her, she is rated 2nd in the world rankings behind Annika Sorenstam. The poll is based on actual results, unlike your post.

"But in the end, all of these behaviors - of the daughter and father - will not lead to the pinnacle of golfing success (maybe financial success though) for Michelle Wie - only "almost", or "nearly at the top", or "not quite" (the current pattern of her performance) - in other words, it will lead to mediocrity."
So much attention for someone who hasn't won a single championship. |

| does anybody have info with Fri off I'd love to go see her, any 16 year old girl that hit the ball 270 yards I got to see |
"I think the only thing going for her that makes people interested in her including sponsors is her youth. But she is very tall for her age, taller than some men golfers, and also commensurately strong, so this is her advantage, and therefore is looking talented at her age." |
