Bo, you had my favorite Biggie.
"Your either slingin crack rock or got a wicked jump shot"

IMO Eminem's voice is whinny and the radio played his stuff too much. I also think 50 cent is played out and both of them wouldn't be half as popular if they didn't have Dre helping them out.

ALSO NOT AN MC BUT TRY HAVE A LISTEN TO FOREIGN BEGGERS!!!!!!!!!!!!! NOW THERE'S FRESH UK TALENT!!!!!!!!

AGREE WITH GURU AND KRS WHAT ABOUT CANNIBUS, BOBBY D, RUN DMC AND JERU DA DAMAGA?

VANILLA ICE Laughing Laughing

SNOOP IS BETTER THAN 50 PENCE TOO BUT THEY ARE BOTH JUST RAPPERS RATHER THAN MC'S!!

BACK TO THE QUESTION OUT OF THAT LIST AS AN ACTUAL MC YOU CAN'T COME CLOSE TO RAKIM BUT MOST OF YOUR CHOICES ARE JUST COMMERCIAL RAPPERS!! Wink

Not at all, just like my real UK floetry, roll off the tongue, think about this one a minute Hip Hop! Very Happy

Don't get me wrong I'm not narrow minded I listen to practically all music, and have a nice hip hop selection you would probably appreciate. but given the choice..................... fresh Underground UK hip hop anyday of the week bar Sunday which is Jazz night!!! Nice

I do like KRS although a bit repatative at times but him and Rakim have raised a few standards along the way so hats off. Rakim is still my choice though from your list as an MC for various reasons! Canibus is quality too and should be up there IMO!!! Wink

Thought you had 50 pence up there! Shocked Long day at work Confused Apologies!

ANYWAY BACK TO SOME BANTER Surprised

UK HIP HOP Vs AMERICAN HIP HOP

Pffffffffffffffft

HANDS DOWN UK ANYDAY OF THE WEEK Wink

ANYONE WHO SAYS AMERICAN OBVIOUSLY HASN'T HEARD ENOUGH UK HIP HOP Very Happy

Roots Manuva gets my 100% respect for the rhyme

"Right now, I see clearer than most
I sit here contented with this cheese on toast"

UK hip hop may be a strange phenomenon to the stateside brothers, perhaps because they don't understand the references (See above rhyme, also Blak Twang rapping about the weakest link etc). MC's in the UK are coming through, and getiing better and better all the time. Many of our MC's have cut their teeth at raves, MC'ing over drum and bass, garage and grime, which gives a different perspective, but the result is usually the BOOM! And at least we haven't warped into w@nky rnb drivel yet (Craig David aside, he was an MC once too Embarassed )[/i]

Laughing Laughing Laughing I like that one! Although I love most black expressions, "ill" is silly.

I'm just wondering why people on this thread are mentioning Snoop Dogg? You think he's good? I'd say average at best. He sounds like he's mumbling half the time. I think he just got a big break and took advantage of it.

Eminem and 50 Cent are just more proof that hip hop has gone way too commercial. I'm sure there are good rappers with something to say out there. They need exposure please.

By the way, what do you think about Jay Z? I think his stuff is well produced, but he's not as good as the old school rappers.

Snoop Dogg, whether you like his style or not, has made tons of cash and is known the world over. I was pretty surprised to see him on the bill at Live8 but hey, fair play to the guy! I actually like Snoop, but only because he reminds me of a certain period of my life.

Do a search on Limewire for a tune called "Who the f**k is 50Cent" by Wu Tang Clan. It kind of sums up my attitude towards him.

Eminem, like Jay Z, at least had the decency to call it a day after they'd done their thing, so fair play to them for that. Personally I found them both boring MC's, but they knew how to market themselves and ultimately make cash - which I'm sure was their agenda from the start. I don't think there was anything particularly special or groundbreaking about them.

As mentioned by other posters, the likes of Mos Def, Guru and the Quannum boys are clever and talented rappers, and do have something sensible to say. And they can rock a party too!! Cool

You're kidding yourself if you think neither will release another album.

If you're looking for best MC, I agree its gotta be someone that says something significant, something to make people think or address issues, rather than just boastin' and talkin about bling...So, KRS, Chuck D, Ice Cube definately come to mind...
But as far as voice, word-play, flow (and not to mention being blessed by working with tight producers ie Timbaland, Neptunes, Just Blaze, Kanye), I gotta vote for Jay-z, Jiggaman, Hov...maybe more of a RAPPER, but he's got the title in my mind...Over 10 albums/collabos, just waiting now for the collabo with Nas...Don't sleep!

"I'm the all-time heavyweight champion of flow-ers...I'm leading the league in at least six statistical categories right now...Best Flow, Most Consistent, Realest Stories, Most Charisma, I set the most trends, and my interviews are hotter, Holla!"

Rakim and Eminem are two of the first that come to mind. Rakim was the first artist I listened to who tried to do more with his lyrics than just rhyme the last word of each line.

When Em is on, he's unstoppable. His verse in "Never Enough" has so many rhymes piled on top of each other it's insane, and his two verses in "Renegade" are equally impressive. He's fallen off, though.

Andre 3K from Outkast is up there, Redman, Meth, Ghostface, etc.

I can't put Big anywhere near the top, though. Yeah, he was good, but he really didn't produce enough impressive material to make the list.

Pac was provocative, but never inspired me as a lyricist.

Among those listed, I'm going with Rakim.

Where's LL Cool J? Shouldn't Outkast be an option?

I personally like MC Serch of Blackalicious.

Plus Q-Tip and Speech. Ad-Rock. Reverend Run.

Perhaps Grandmaster Flash is the illest of the ill.

I have issues with it, but I really liked Tiberious's top 100 rap albums.

You should link that sh!t up. Lots of worthy discussion there.

Maybe I've become a curmudgeon in my old age, but GofG, Lateef and LB (and others such as Del and Aceyalone) these days are to me the equivalent of those hip-hoop dudes you sometimes see on TV or at your local b-ball court (this actually deserves its own post): all style and little substance. Sure, they can craft an actual song from time to time, but they mostly prefer to bounce around words that fit neatly together but don't say much besides "I'm so fresh, you're so wack."

Then again, I'm still a fan of MF DOOM, Aesop Rock and others who are the hip-hop equivalent of a Jackson Pollack painting.

In UK hip hop, I really like The Streets. Some people would be picky and say, that's garage, but whatever. He's got some great rhymes and stories, and some great English humour...

Dizzie Rascal's very good from the UK (London).

My American friend in Korea introduced me to him!

Check out tracks 'I love u', 'Dream', 'He's just a rascal' and 'Sounds of da future'.

Very good indeed.
