| Earlier for me, it was porn, but now it says the domain name is up for sale. |

| Somewhat good news. Talked to Chris a few hours ago. A cease and desist has gone through the registrars and through icann. The other party has probably already recieved the legal notification. I suspect that is the cause of the change in the website from 'adult' to 'buy this website now'. I hope he wins this. But just so you know, the 'buy now' is probably a last ditch effort to make money from the name before it gets transferred back. |

As far as I know, it still has not been resolved. You are probably hitting a cached version (cached DNS name pointer that is) so if you do luck out and get an up and running version, download everything you think you might need because it's going to take a while to sort this out. Even if the domain gets transferred back tomorrow, it will take a day or two to propogate through the all of the internet servers. |

Just curious, but how was this an illegal domain snatch? The guy actually hacked the registrar? Doubtful, as illegal types don't willingly allow their name and contact info to be displayed on the WHOIS register.
Not sure if this is the case, but this sort of thing happens everyday when someone inadvertantly lets their domain expire and it automatically gets snapped up on a backorder and resold on an expired domains site. Then someone saw the Google PR of the site and snapped it up quick.
Expired domain resellers are so prevalent these days, that virtually every domain that has a Google PR over 1 has been backordered by resellers, hoping that the owner forgets to renew in time.
So for anyone that owns a site that cares about keeping the domain, make sure you're mindful of your domain's expiry date.
Nevertheless, I do hope that this issue is resolved, as I do like to lean on that site for lesson help. |

The info I have and I've been talking to Chris periodically all day (and night) is that the domain was set to expire in 2008. The person who got the domain transferred used outdated whois info to get into the registrar account. Last week the whois info was changed without notification to Chris. Then the registrar let the domain go without question based on the hacked whois info.
So this is not a question of a lapsed domain name. |

What is webspider? |
It's an internet vaccum. Copies entire web sites to your hard drive for offline use. |

Now I'm curious. How much storage does something like that require? |

This thread is hilarious. I was drawn into it by the nonsensical title, further hooked by the "warning" not to look at the site, because it is now porn. (so of course, what is the first thing I did?), and I'm stillnot sure how "The person who got the domain transferred used outdated whois info to get into the registrar account."
But my sympathies to the webmaster. Even if it was his fault, it's still a rough blow.
I would also be careful with hiring a lawyer. There is not a lot these guys can do. Choose wisely.
And Demo, out of curiousity, why would you mirror a good site on your hard drive? Offline use?
I have had to do it for clients from time to time. I used something called winhttrack. |

I save a site on my HDD in case I need it offline.
The size depends on the site. Try to grab CNN.com and watch....heh! However, a site like boggles or many other ESL sites are actually quite small. |

| Let's also hope that we all make a donation, and that Chris keeps us posted about his expenses. He has created a great site which I'm sure has helped a great many of us many times. |
