Can you eat more than 2 or 3 Korean dishes and still not eat meat??

Back on topic. Koreans sure can stink it up... ever work out at a gym where you share clothes? Even after a good washing they can really hurt the old nose.

I do my best...

Suppose it is the result of being almost carnivorous and never really looking for other options. Plus, I always hear vegetarians complain about finding dishes in Korea.

Yeah, dude, "Oriental" is not the preferred nomenclature. Do you still call black people "Negroes", too?

The Dude: Walter, the chinaman who peed on my rug, I can't go give him a bill, so what the *beep* are you talking about?

Walter Sobchak: What the *beep* are you talking about? The chinaman is not the issue here, dude. I'm talking about drawing a line in the sand, dude. Across this line, you DO NOT... Also, dude, chinaman is not the preferred nomenclature. Asian-American, please.

The Dude: Jeez, Walter, I'm not talking about the guys who built the *beep* railroad here.

I used "oriental" 'cause I couldn't think of the proper word to classify People from China, Japan, Korea, and Vietnam. I can't use the word "asian" because that is wy too general and covers too many regions including such ethnically diverse places as India and Thailand.

Yes, we call caucaisans "white people", and negores "Black people", but do you know anybody that uses the word "yellow people" when talking about Koreans or Japanese? That, to me, somehow sounds more offensive than orientals.

Ummm, well, how about "East Asians"?

In the "Orientalist" literature of colonialism, even Middle Easterners are also considered "oriental", so you add no clarification by saying "oriental" instead of Asian. Want to be more specific? Then be more specific! I have even seen people referred to as "North-East" Asians, and "Far East" Asians.

And I haven't yet seen anyone who is yellow!

Get with the times, young man, you sound like my father!!! Rolling Eyes

I'm assuming you missed Said Day in your four years of college? Inconvenient, that.

Quote:

oriental

adj.

Oriental
Of or relating to the countries of the Orient or their peoples or cultures; eastern.

Oriental
Of or designating the biogeographic region that includes Asia south of the Himalaya Mountains and the islands of the Malay Archipelago.

Lustrous and valuable: oriental pearls.

Of or relating to a genuine or superior gem: an oriental ruby.
Relating to or designating corundum that resembles another stone in color.

n.
Oriental

Often Offensive
. An Asian.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
orientally adv.

Usage Note:

Asian is now strongly preferred in place of Oriental for persons native to Asia or descended from an Asian people. The usual objection to Oriental meaning easternis that it identifies Asian countries and peoples in terms of their location relative to Europe. However, this objection is not generally made of other Eurocentric terms such as Near and Middle Eastern. The real problem with Oriental is more likely its connotations stemming from an earlier era when Europeans viewed the regions east of the Mediterranean as exotic lands full of romance and intrigue, the home of despotic empires and inscrutable customs. At the least these associations can give Oriental a dated feel, and as a noun in contemporary contexts (as in the first Oriental to be elected from the district) it is now widely taken to be offensive. However, Oriental should not be thought of as an ethnic slur to be avoided in all situations. As with Asiatic, its use other than as an ethnonym, in phrases such as Oriental cuisine or Oriental medicine, is not usually considered objectionable.
