Rue the day I take over the world because I'm shooting everybody who feels they are defined by a song.
Damn simpletons. |

I cannot say it's my FAVORITE song exactly, but I can say it's the only song that defines me. If you wanna know what makes SPIN tick, in every possible way, listen to this song. The lyrics, the music, the sound effects, the melody.....everything. It's all in there. |
Hm! I never expected anyone to choose that song. I remember when I first got that album on tape I would listen to that very song repeatedly imagining that if I listened to it just right I would be able to directly tap into whatever it was that came over me whenever I heard it. That thing that disappears as soon as you realize what's happening to you, if you know what I mean.
In the same way I'm not sure whether I could call it my favourite, but that's probably because once I do that it feels like the song itself would lose something so I dare not do that. |

Not a song. 10 songs.
VanIslander,
Sorry. I didn't mean to offend you. Do come back and post whoever you want. That was only intended as a poke. Who am I to attack what defines you?
My bad.

You know what? Transylvania has to be heard first; makes it just that much better. Hearing it again I just remembered that. |

These five came quickly to me, and are definitive in lyrics or sound or emotion or just overall strikes a central chord in me.
10. When Doves Cry, Prince
9. Strange Fruit, Billie Holiday
8. I Want You, Elvis Costello
7. Don't Let The Sun Go Down On Me, Elton John
6. Have you ever been in love, Celine Dion
But the most definitive songs I'd say are those that work on every level:
5. Summertime, Diana Ross
4. If you love somebody, set them free, Sting
3. Life uncommon, Jewel
2. Dear Jesse, Madonna
1. What a Wonderful World, Louis Armstrong
Yet the most definitive music for me aren't "songs" per se: from classical music and jazz. |
