Anyway, I think that seriously controversial topics like contentious religious issues and ideological and philosophical clashes (remember New Left "guru" Herbert Marcuse?...) that inform and shape various political movements and parties are most suitably discussed in "Current Events". |
Where I come from, the beef industry definitely has a lobby in government.
As such I believe it "shapes and informs" my country's politics.
Does that give me the right to ask whether people are going to eat cheeseburgers tonight on the CURRENT EVENTS forum?
No.
That's NOT a current event.
But, does it give someone else the right to ask if people are going to heaven on the CURRENT EVENTS forum?
No.
That's also NOT a current event.
Moreover, such questions have already been on the off-topic forum WHERE THEY BELONG.
I've seen some pretty serious topics (including racism. sexism, rape, suicide, and RELIGION) discussed on that forum.
How your religious discussions were received there doesn't concern me,but it is where they belong unless they're related to a current event.
I don't think what I'm saying is unreasonable. |
I think the difference is that eating a cheeseburger is fun and goofy...whereas talking about religion isn't always fun and is sometimes met with anger and hostility. I and many other posters think that the off topics forum is best suited for fun/light topics. I(t's been discussed in the past. Have you seen the threads?) Whereas current events is about heavier discussions, like geopolitical and religion. They are interwined and very relevant to current events. |

Yes. Do show those threads.
And list your "many other posters".
You're not the only Christian on here. The other ones I know of observe the forum rules and guidelines.
If you think my concerns are fun and goofy, then I think yours are.
Let's keep the "fun" in OT; that is, unless it's relevant to a current event. |

why can't you find it yourself? |
Because:
A) I didn't know what thread you were referring to.
and
B) What's there is a 20-page thread with a lot of valid discussion and I still don't see the "many" people who wanted you to move to CE. I see Rteacher mention it once.
and
C)Both here and there, you seem to be dishing it out as much as you are taking it.
and
D)The same people have followed you here.
and
E) Your questions that have no relation to current events belong in OT.
Contentious shmentious. You and Rteacher are inventing your own rules.
Serious shmerious. You're a religious Laurel and Hardy claiming as much space for your own self-serving monologues.
Here's an idea: create threads in OT about your respective religions. Ask all the questions you want. Explain all you want.
How about that? |

"Self-serving?" - Like Bob Dylan notes in his song, everybody's "Gotta Serve Somebody"... Who are you serving (especially by these kind of whiny posts about religion not belonging in CE?...) And what's the harm?
Obviously, some people, expressing all kinds of religious and philosophical views, see value in posting on such threads - regardless of which forum they are posted in... |

I'm thinking about starting another anti-religious-thread thread.
How does this strike you?
[Poll] Are the Clash eating yeti cheeseburgers in heaven?
[ ] Yeah, man. Yeti cheeseburgers are the way to salvation.
[ ] No way. They don't sell them at Burger King, so no go.
[ ] Why not? They're a healthy meal.
[ ] Dude, I am a yeti, and I don't approve of you eating my brethren.
But more seriously ...
Fiveeagles' bible-thumping threads are like that game, "Whack-A-Mole."
As soon as you clobber one on the head, another one pops up.
So the question is: Which forum would be best for his holier-than-thou preaching?
NowhereMan, you're right in that, technically, starting a thread in the Current Events forum about a topic that's not currently in the news is "against the rules."
However, this is also against the rules, is it not?
FORUM GUIDELINES - READ FIRST! (Updated 2004-08-07)
11. Articles that are more than 300 words may be edited or deleted. Try to keep your comments concise. If an article is longer, post a link and quote only the really important parts to your argument.
This rule is flagrantly disregarded in the Off-Topics Forum all the freaking time!
Certain posters are obviously doing it deliberately, posting huge articles in their entirety as a way of burying their opponents in "paperwork" and shutting them down.
So believe it or not, I'm actually going to defend fiveeagles here by saying that we have no right to point fingers at him until the other posters in the Off-Topic Forum start getting themselves under control, too. |
