Same type of thing has happened to me numerous times, Ya-Ta Boy. I'll be sitting in the office, and the director or secretary will pop in and act surprised that I'm not in class.
You had class starting 5 minutes ago!
Uh.. no I didn't.
New class is starting today!
Why didn't you tell me?
Oh, we must have forgotten! I'm sorry. Please just go do something with them.
Ok, what books are they using?
Oh, we haven't gotten books for them yet. Just do something with them and make it fun for today, okay?
Oooookay.
That's happened about, oh.. five times in the past two months I've worked at this hagwon. It's like they expect me to magically know about everything that's going on. |
AHAHAHHAHAHA. Sorry Qinella. Don't mean to laugh at your cost. We used to have the same shit at our school too. The guys directing it now is doing a phenomenal (sp?) job with it when comparing him to the last English head. I am very proud of him. |

I read carefully but maybe assumed you never initially talked to your co-teacher about the class. I just wonder why you are left out the loop is all.
I find out last minute about canceled classes, but usually my teacher finds out last minute as well. The whole hierachy thing sux here and if Im every Queen I will definatly let everyone know in advance about any changes to the schedule. Well maybe. Power is a seductive thing.

| May I offer a suggestion then? You are half of the equation. If they ask you about the classes you say to them 'this is the time I have available to get together and discuss the class' |
Not to be rude or anything, but you aren't reading very closely, are you?
I once had a girl in class back home...her parents were owned the town bank, the town restaurant and the town everything...and during a class discussion of the causes of poverty she raised her hand and said, "I just don't understand poor people. Why don't they just go out and get a job if poverty is so bad?" I don't know why I had that flashback, but I did. |

Same thing happened to me. I was supposed to give a class a verbal test. I was told many times weeks in advance to have it finished, make the questions easy, blah blah blah.
Anyways after spending my time making these questions, I arrive at school and was told about 5 mins before class "you don't need to test them".
Does anyone know anyone who can make class plans in 5 mins?
I had my laptop, all classes have beam projectors, I had a movie. Everything clicked together.
Everything went well (well watching the same part of the same movie 4 or 5 times can be annoying) until one guy says " you shouldn't be watching movies in class"
I lost it. |

Yeah- co-teachers here are pretty much a waste of space. They make VERY easy tests (so everyone complains about my tests), order terrible textbooks (so I have to deal with bad material), and they're supposed to call the parents with any problems because, BIG SHOCK, I don't speak Korean. Last week, we had "open classes" -mothers watched the classes and then grilled me, through my "translator", the director, about their kids.
Well, one of the mothers was SHOCKED and EMBARRASSED to discover, from ME, that her child isn't doing very well. He's been in this crappy school for over a year and can't say even simple things. This has been on every evaluation I've done over the past few weeks (I've only been here weeks), and the co-teacher never bothered to tell the parent. BTW, the co-teacher also gave this student low marks.
It's the co-teacher's job to let parents know these things, but, as usual, left it up to me to be the heavy and deliver the bad news.
If/when a parent calls with any concerns, any blame is shifted to ME, of course.

Oh, and the co-teachers didn't even bother to tell me that the end of the month is test time. My students didn't take tests the last week in May, because no one bothered to tell me what was up.
Plus, rooms are changed, all of the time, and who gets to search for the new classroom? Me, of course. Co-teachers are a waste of space. |
