Oh yeah, I forgot to tell y'all that she canceled our sick days too, coz it was "too hard" on the Korean teachers to cover our classes (hey, it's not my fault that she has us working an 8 hour day without a break). I'd love to just up and quit and leave her in the lurch, but then again, I would like to stick around Korea/Asia for a few more months.

You might want to point out to her that you are entitled to a one hour break when you work 8 hours.....a break that you are free to take and go anywhere you wish.

How did she cancel your sick days? Are they in your contract? If so tell her you are taking one of your sick days off as stress leave because of her actions.

Sounds like she has violated the hell out of your contract....contact the labour board and file on her.

Dont forget to blacklist her and the school too Wink

I agree that this is a BS thing for her to say.

She kept saying "this is Korea, in Korea you must follow Korean custom, and if you play with Korean girls on your free time, then Korean parents will complain."

However--sorry--she kinda has a point here. Right or wrong, that's the way it is.

You sound young. Are you young?

Take Qinella's advice. Just say one thing and do another. They won't call you on it.

Go with this. Every time the boss gives you absolute bs rules, nod your head in agreement, then when you are away from the office, do as you like. Be somewhat more discreet about it, but do treat the boss like an idiot parent who can't get it through their head that you're an adult now.

Its a real pain moving around a lot, but quitting useless job after slave driving job appears to be inevitable in this country.

I'm sick of quitting, personally. you just settle somewhere, make friends, get into a routine, then they throw sh*t in your face and you have to quit.
They always do something dissapointing.

Bah, I ran into a father of a middle-school girl of mine in a bar. He tried to buy me and my co-worker prostitutes, and also said he could get us discounts in the future because he was such a good customer (they have loyalty cards?).

Some might not like you associating with Korean women, others will encourage it =)

Actually I think most parents won't really care and think its normal if you get a girlfriend. If however all the single women in the town start rocking up to the local abortion clinic you might get into trouble.

Sorry but when does it stop being the employers fault here?

When does it start to dawn on a person that if they keep landing bad jobs then perhaps they are somewhat responsible for the choices they make?

Landing one or two bad jobs and quitting is normal.

Never being able to finish a contract is not.

How do you define crap being thrown at you?

That is purely unacceptable and you should quit on principle. Give her a letter stating that you are quitting because of her racial prejudice and spend the next 30 days hanging out with K-girls around your hogwan as much as possible. I work at a private high school in about the most conservative town possible and have NEVER had anyone at my school try anything like that. Your director is a biggoted racist bitch of the highest order who needs to be taught a lesson.

Unbelievable story. Surely there must be an authority whom you can report this racist bitch ti. Maybe try contacting esl law. This is one of the attitudes that makes Korea so unlikable at times.
Even if there was physical contact that's nobody's business.
Shocking.

I hate this country at times.

Is your school in Ulsan, by any chance?

Your director is power-tripping for sure, but you have to ask yourself if this is really worth quitting over?

Is your job relatively satisfactory in other respects? Judging from the title of this thread, I'd say not. But then again, it was the heat of the moment, so maybe after a day or two you'll get past this.

If not, then hand in your notice.

Some bosses still have a slave-owner mentality, so it's best just to get away from an employer like that.

No need to be angry though, you have to be able to laugh at her childishness....or you will drive yourself crazy.

Good Luck

Your boss sounds like a real idiot. She shouldn't interfere in your personal life. Some posters are saying you should resign, but you want to stay, obviously with a resolution to your bosses interference. Follow Qinellla's advice, give your boss the old " yeah, yeah, i agree, yeah yeah."
Battling with your boss is futile and will only create more antagonism. Don't resign

One thing that might help you back off a bit and cool down is this little picture. I came into work and it was meeting time, but not for me. All the K-teachers were listening to the boss in a classroom. They sat in the little kid's desks BORED to tears and obviously only a paycheque was tying them down for a spell as the boss droned on and on like Napoleon into battle. He OWNED them in that room. But I'm not in the meeting. As a foreigner I am not subject to the detailed memorandi they must pretend to care about. Your boss can only bark at you about not hanging around with Korean girls. Her English isn't good enough to be able to hold you down and really get under your skin. Like the Korean teachers are controlled. If you can get a good laugh out of it! That's what I mean about 'making your mind a fortress'. Not pouring arrows out of one's eyes and hot oil out of one's ears to discourage mental space invaders from attempting to storm one's battlements. That's a seminar on dvd available at www.fortressmind.com which I have yet to prepare and market. Bwahaha.....

If you were back in your homeland who would have the interest to tell you not to talk to young, unmarried women? Your wife, your mother, your Grandmother. Try to see your boss as someone who cares Wink

Today I was on my break and hanging out with some female Korean friends who work at the English school upstairs when one of my Korean co-workers tipped my boss off, prompting her to fly upstairs in a rage and chew out the manager of their school for letting his workers hang out with a Westerner (the boss upstairs had no choice but to take it, coz my boss owns the entire building consisting of several different Hagwons). I was then called into my boss's office and told I was not to talk with Korean girls in the city I work in (Chilgok), and could only meet girls in downtown Daegu. Despite saying "my personal life is my own f***ing business" over and over again. She kept saying "this is Korea, in Korea you must follow Korean custom, and if you play with Korean girls on your free time, then Korean parents will complain." She lectured me on acting professionally and upholding my duty to the school. She then proceeded to bad mouth the girls (who are my closest Korean friends, and some of the nicest people I've ever met). She said they were "bad people," that they were "wild," and that they were "only being my friend to learn English off me" (none of which is true...granted they don't fit the stereotype of good conservative Korean girls, by Western standards they are downright prude. And, they teach me way more Korean than I teach them English). The whole time I was absolutly dumbstruck. I knew my boss was monster, but this reaches whole new heights.

I also found out my school is in the red and ripe for a blacklisting to put this mutha-f***ing biatch out of business for good. It's just about that time. It's also about time to start smashing s**t

Dude, that's B U L L s h i t. She must either be a control freak, or wants to get in your pants. I'd continue to hang out with them. What's she going to do about it? Fire you? That's a ripe case for the labor board.

So, yeah, what qinella said Wink Oh, now you have an excuse to take them all out to a hof (to make up for your boss being an a-hole, you know...)^^
