I know LC is chronically irrelevant (a result of being an attention-getter), but this one is even less relevant than usual.
It kind of hurts when you just don't matter, doesn't it? |

I have never been a North American man, and I use it a few times a week, at least once in every conversation with my best friend.
I guess I need to add: I don't usually call people "dude," but use it in more of a "Beavis and Butthead" sort of way: when the project I'm workingon suddenly blows up in our faces, I turn to my companion and say, "Dude..."

| It's directly proportional to the length and amount of a man's (or dude's) hair. |

I still say it, I'm 38 and female (and I have long hair, heh). For me it's a southern Californiaism. It's not uncommon to hear adults say it. I probably wouldn't use it in the office, but in casual conversation, sure. We use it as an expression of incredulity, not as the equivalent of "y'know" or as a way of addressing someone. There are some events and times for which it is the only appropriate response. |

The speaker? or the person referred to?
My bro & I rarely use each others' names. We just address each other as, well, "Dude."
Shock or disbelief: "No way, Dude!"
I disagree, but have something to say, "Duuuuuuude.."
It's very universal, but reserved for specific situations.
My/our hairlength varies depending on laziness, but would almost never be considered long. Facial hair, too.
EDIT: I should have said versatile rather than universal. My Englishee sux. |

i'd be surprised to hear young people saying it.
edit: incidentally, although i came of age in the 80s, i NEVER used that word when i was a kid. now, i do -particularly when i'm talking to my children.
