Its amazing that whenever I get back into Korea, I want to leave it again. Last time it was being ripped off by a taxi driver and yelled at with some blah blah blah and 'meegook' and a thumbs down!
This time, its the whole bumping thing. I dont think Ill ever get over it. So, I just got off the plane from a 12 day vacation in Thailand (and nobodoy bumps in Bangkok!) and Ive been in Korea a whole 30 minutes.. waiting for my suitcase when... BUMP.. by some fat Korean woman.. I glare at her like what on earth was THAT for lady! Im working on 2 hours sleep here..... She just walks like no big deal then... BUMP about a minute later.. I look around, plenty of room to walk without bumping right into me! errrrrrrrrrrrr........ some guy with his trolly and bags.... i glare at him too but he sticks his nose up like hes all that and a bag of rice... and then another BUMP.. on the way back from the same man. I got bumped again but some young chick too. All in a span of like 10 minutes.
Now heres what I think:
A. They want me to yell at them.
B. They want me to punch them.
C. They are freakin THAT blind to public courtesy.
I can be socailly retarded sometimes and a bit passive, but any hints on what to say to someone the next time they do this would be great. I really hate it and I dont think its too much trouble to walk around me if there is plenty of room to do so. Its just the look in their faces like they have the RIGHT to do it?!? I really sometimes think its racist! (not all Koreans are racist, but some are just like some Americans are)
I know excuse me: shill-yea-hamnida... but should I say something like, hey buddy watch it!... or what? I cant just stand idle anymore. Its pissing me off.
Thanx Other than that........ gosh I need to get out more. I only know one person irl from this board. |
1. The taxi thing was 100% your fault. Thats what everyone here told you.
2. They bump into everybody. You arent a target. You arent been singled out. You arent special. |

I said that tongue in cheek, didn't mean to bring out the truth but now that you've said it, its inevitable that these things happen.

I dont think Ill be shouldering any Korean ladies.. or men for bumping me.. though a good wrestle sound kinda fun Im afraid Id be thrown in jail and hung or something. Mind my p's and q's (wahts that stand for anyways?).....
Hrmm....well..... maybe Ill try the 'excuse me' with the evil glare. |
I was stood on the subway (fairly crowded i'll admit) last week when a young guy about 18, busy chattering away to his friend, ket bumping into me. Hard enough to notice. Every jink and movement of the train, i was practically rammed in the back. 3rd time I yelled "ya! hajimah!" and barged him about 3 feet across the carriage, and glared. They both went quiet and slunk away slowly.
And- believe it or not I am a free man! Yep, not in jail!
If its someone older I'd probably have just glared though. However maybe not.. about 2 months back i noticed someone always pushed in front of me when i bought cigarettes in the shop. next time I went in, I was prepared, and expected it. The first old guy walked straight in front of me at the counter and demanded service as if i was an illusion. "Hey! Kidaryo! na monjoh heso!" i yelled and glared. he backed off, speechless, with a dumbfounded/confused look on his face.
So..it takes a while to become assertive in this disorienting country. i still get taken by surprise. but the occasional release of temper works wonders. I'm not saying do it at every oportunity, because you'd be angry all day long- and I think most of the time these people don't even realise that they're being rude. its normal, acceptable behaviour to them. |

Why bother attempting to shout something back in Korean? they'd only laff at your pronunciation. Use english. |

Don't get mad at Koreans for being Korean. That's silly. It's normal for them to plow into each other. It seems insanely rude by 'western' standards...but you're not living in the 'west'. From what I've been told 'westerners' do some pretty rude things by Korean standards but they are usually pretty understanding about it. I've never really been yelled at by a Korean (that wasn't drunk) before.
Don't get me wrong, I admit that it totally sucks and more than once I've wanted to walk up to the guy that bumped into me, point over his shoulder, ask him 'what's that?' and then when he looks, WHAM! sucker punch to the throat. But other than making me feel better, it wouldn't accomplish much |

I have become more Korean with this. If I am leaving the subway train I will walk and push people out of my way. Its the Korean way. Push or be pushed.
On the other hand, I love to open doors for Koreans and let them get on buses first. "Maw jaw ta (ga) se yo"
But not trains. When it comes to trains I'm cut throat. |

I don't get bumped into. My trick is that I walk a half step slower than Koreans (they are in such a freaking rush to get nowhere anyway), and by walking that little bit slower, just by instinct the faster people will do the adjustng. It sounds strange, but I urge everyone to give it a try.
My theory is that because of they are always forced to do stuff that they don't want to do, because of confucianism (sic), they have a passive-aggressive thing going in their walking and driving. It is their little way of getting back at the man. Remember, you're just here a while and then you get to escape. They will always have to live with the Korean mindset. Feel pity, not anger. |

I think its really funny when I visit Canada (like next week) & people fall over themselves apologizing because they almost brushed against you.
Lighten up. |
I agree, it's hilarious. I remember the last time I came back here I was at the airport and was about to go through the gate when an ajumma who had been on my ass the whole time with her cart trying to get ahead decided it was time to make a break for it even though I was going through the gate so I just kind of stepped to the left a bit so my heel got the wheel of her cart and stopped it dead but it looked unintentional on my part. That's lots of fun. |

We call it "pulling a Korean" when someone cuts in front of you on the sidewalk then slows down to a snail's pace or completely stops.
On bad days, I often see the sidewalk-hogging and bumping as a sign that there are no ninjas in Seoul. That's too bad. |

Haha!!
Man I was on the subway yesterday coming from Kangnam, as crowded and packed as a subway car can possibly get, and in comes this really, really old guy. Man, he put a shoulder down and rammed right through everyone to get to the old person seats. That was so awesome. I wanted to give him a high five. Can't wait til I'm old and can get away with that stuff. I'm gonna go to McDonald's, order a coffee, and sit there for 7 hours getting free refills and complaining about everything. |
