(commenting as I read the thread)...
From what I've seen of "Airplane!", it deserves to be on the list.
Leaving Las Vegas was a pretentious piece of sex-farce.
Lost in Translation only succeeded in showing the Japanese as farcical creatures and women (Johansson) as mysterious beings not to be understood (because you know all women would somehow be unfulfilled in a strange, new place while entertained by a charming, older man). S. Coppola keeps hitting us over the head with her women-are-mysterious-creatures-not-to-be-understood message (Virgin Suicides, anybody?), but I don't see how it's relevant or helps womankind any.
Moulin Rouge is one of my favorites, but it's purely mindless entertainment -- not that that doesn't have any value in and of itself, but for the purposes of 'top xxx' lists, it doesn't belong. Again, one of my top favorite films. If anything, it might belong on these types of lists due to its brilliant editing (the Roxanne tango-bit)
Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon - was that really not on the list? If it wasn't, shame on IMDB! That was one of the most beautiful (of late) and well-told stories that came from this side of the world.
Toy Story was brilliant. Toy Story 2 was an inspired sequel, but a sequel nonetheless, with all the characteristics of being one (static characters, predictable plot, etc).
Clerks - never saw this movie, but saw the Smith's other film, Chasing Amy, which I thought was an utter piece of crap. Truthfully, Chasing Amy turned me off to the rest of Smith's works, but due to the fact that everyone and their mom keeps telling me how wonderful 'Clerks' is, I'll rent it at some point.
Was Rocky (and any of its derivatives) really not on the list?! Inconceivable!
Princess Mononoke was a brilliant piece of work. It deserves its place on the list.
Ferris Bueller's Day Off: I actually went and checked IMDB's site to make sure this actually wasn't on the list. I could understand if this film didn't make top 10 lists, but a 'top 250' list without bueller? What a joke.
Films not in IMDB's top 250 list that deserve to be on it:
- Last of the Mohicans
- Princess Bride (ok, it's on there, but deserves a higher spot than #121)
- (there are probably more, but I just can't think of any right now) |

| American History X is a lousy propaganda film. It's the best recruiting tool for white supremacist groups. |
But that's not why I enjoy it. And I feel that was not the intent behind it.
What are you, a skinhead or something? Lighten up. |
Without getting into it again, yes I am. Thanks to that movie people have some pretty backwards ideas about what that means. It would've been more effective to make a movie about skinheads without racism. |
I think you know I know you are and was joking, and in any case, wasn't it a movie about American racism, with skinheads; and not skinheads, with racism? |
