TUM used to boast about his 12 or 13 hours/wk and his four weeks vacation. Now he teaches 20 hours/wk and his vacation was cut to 2 weeks. And he didn't get a raise. He's only making 2.4 million/month and he's been here fro like 6 years or something. I make the same + OT and I've only been here about a year and a half.
Hagwons are where it's at. |

Either you are lying outright, or have serious comprehension problems. Do you really expect us to take you seriously when you post such misleading crap?
I teach 20 CLASSES a week. Each class is 40 minutes. 20*40=800 minutes. 800/60 =13 hours and 20 minutes. But it is rare that I get the full 80 classes a month. There's always some meeting or event at least once or twice a month.
And where do you get this nonsense about vacation cut to two weeks? Officially it is two weeks. Unofficially it is now 6 weeks 3 each per vacation. Like I said in another post, I choose to have extra vacation time rather than a raise. Not all of us are hungry money-grubbers trying to squeeze every last won out of a situation. I've already made my pile when I spent my first two years here, working 2 jobs and making 3.8 million won a month. Of course I was doing a 10 hour shift but then you can't make an omelet without breaking eggs. These days I'd rather have a higher quality of life.
Enjoy your ten days of vacation. I'll be off from August 5-28. |

Why would you have misled people by telling everyone you work 13 hours/wk? We all know what a teaching hour is.
Why would you work for less money? That's not very smart.
Are you not able to find a good hagwon job? I did. You've been here like 7 years and you only make 2.4 million? I guess you're not worth any more than that. Pretty low salary for a "veteran". Looks like they don't appreciate you very much if they don't give raises.
Enjoy your 8-5, call center-type salaryand enjoy wherever you're going (ESL Cafe) for your vacation.
And let me ask you. Are you having a good time? Are you enjoying this? I can keep going on. How does it feel?

1. An hour is 60 minutes. Always has been, always will be (unless they change the rules, as they seem to apparently have in jacl-land)
2. Less money? I work for the same salary and more vacation time. Like I said, I don't need the money THAT badly.
3. I've been there, done that. Paid my dues. Now I'm taking it easy.
4. Divide your salary by your hours. Now divide my salary by hours. Oh wow! Seems like you're the one on a call center-type salary. I work only a little more than 1/3 the hours you do and make the same wage you do. Are you not able to find a good public school job?
When you first came on this board, you claimed to be making 2.55. Now suddenly you've been dropped to 2.4 and that's with overtime. At least I was able to stay at the same salary. Why would you work for a pay cut? Think that's smart? |

2.8 with OT, buddy. OT = 30,000/hr. My class size averages 6 to 7 students. I'm only at the hagwon 34 hours a week. I teach my students in one class what would take you 10 classes to teach. I have my own computer in the classroom and I teach them for maybe 40 minutes and show them a video for 10.
Your job isn't even near in the same class as mine. |

In your dream world maybe. Anyway I'm done with this thread. But even if you ARE making 2.8 that's still low for all those hours comparatively. Tell you what. You enjoy your high salary (if you are really making that much) and I'll enjoy my long vacations.

1. We all know what a teaching hour is.
2. Salary is salary. Work is work. Time spent at school is work. Sitting around is annoying. Time goes by faster when you're having fun.
3. You've been there and you can't manage people and took the crappy route.
4. See "2". |

Mr. Ya-ta Boy. I was under the impression that you were NOT re -signing. At least that's what I gathered from previous posts. Good to hear things are starting to look up for you. You're one of the saner posters on this board.

Oh, Mr. TUM, my life has been more than a little like a bad, bad Korean soap opera the last two months.
At this point I am free to say that I am waiting with every finger and toe crossed to hear from what sounds like an ideal job for me--but every decision-maker in the place is on vacation for the week, while the powers that be here are asking hourly if I will re-sign.
And yes, I heartily endorse your evaluation of my sanity. It's a definite (or should that be 'definate'?) indication of your own above-average powers of perception. |

You have to teach 45 kids at once and you get shat on by your Korean co-teacher. Administration ignore you. You have to clean your classroom and do shared cleaning duties for the bathroom. Providing weekly lesson plans is the norm. Classes are generally cancelled without notice. If you don't have a Korean co-teacher, the students are unruly and nobody does anything to make them behave.
Kids hardly learn anything, but you get paid on time.

I do believe that Jacl has never taught a day of public school in his life. Apart from class cancellations he doesn't have a clue what he's talking about. |

It's pretty pointless to make blanket statements about Korean public schools. There is no standardization like in NA, all schools are different. My biggest class was 58 students, but it was only for 2 months. Now my biggest class is 38.
Not all Korean co-teachers are bad.
You do NOT have to clean bathrooms like Jacl said. Why did you even bother posting that? Even in third world countries like Africa they have janitors who do that kind of stuff. I don't know any public school teachers who spend their time cleaning bathrooms.
Many of my students do misbehave when the Korean teacher isn't around. If there is one thing that you should take from this thread that would be useful is that if you are a beginner to teaching, getting a job at a good hagwon would be better than starting in public school. Public school in Korea is really tough for beginners. Regardless of what any recruiter says you will have to teach alone some of the time and it can be reallly tough even for the most experienced teachers. It is MUCH easier if you can speak even a little Korean though.
