I think what some posters might be wondering is why you used a well-known racial slur to describe Japanese people.

How exactly does "NIP" entail a "racial slur"? Laughing

Now, something more along the lines of say "stupid slant-eyed gook" sure, but NIP? I don't think so.

Your ability to waltz with such effortless grace between the blatantly offensive and the breathtakingly surreal is a marvel to behold.

Really...considering that China is a communistic piece of dirt, has no respect for humans(much less for animals) why would one want to even spend a day there? Korea may be fruity but I'll bet the Chinese are some real buttnuts that will bend you over quick...

Well, what the *beep* am I supposed to answer when someone asks me why I think "nip" should be considered a racial slur?

Tell ya what. Next time you're back in Canada, saunter down to your local Japanese-Canadian community centre, and greet the people you meet there with "howzit goin', ya nips". Then get back to us on the reaction.

Limmeys = English folk

etc etc ...

So, because the word for Japan in Japanese in "Nippon", then the word "nip" as used by English speakers can't possibly be a racial slur?

One could call another an orange.

That orange! Oh well, it's just those oranges again ... etc etc ...

What exactly is the speaker's intent?

In inself, using NIP to describe or refer to Japs is absolutely meaningless, other than it has its roots in the very word they use to describe themselves.

Also, i further think you're confusing national distinctions with racial. Nips constitute a nation, not a distinct race. Race encompasses Asians as a whole. That's why i stated something like "those stupid slanty-eyed gooks" would better constitute what you are hoping to argue in favour of ( i.e. an offensive racial slur )

Either way i smell a stinky bunch of PC thought.

No, but I assumed that your OTO(H) rendering of my name was a referene to the OTO. So I was playing along.

As for the topic at hand...

Quote:

Yes, but you would be well-advised not to do that, because every other single time that the word "orange" is used, it's used differently than the usage you suggest here.

So I will leave you with this...

What percentage of the time do you suppose the word "nip" is used by English-speakers as a neutral description of Japanese people?

And what percentage of the time do you think it used by English speakers as an ethnic slur?

Now, having answered that question honestly, would you not say that someone who uses the word in the first sense is pretty much begging to be misunderstood?

Incredible!
He's actually claiming ignorance of the fact that it's a racial slur!!!

Is that really possible, given that he's teaching English in Asia?!?

Shocked

Can you imagine a Korean student planning a trip to Canada, and being told by his ESL instructor that "nip" is an appropriate word to use when referring to Japanese people? If the concept of "professional misconduct" has any application in the ESL field, I'd say that definitely qualifies as such.

Are the Chinese generally more straight-foward & nowhere the two-faced weasels the way too many Koreans are?

While i could be way off base here, i even suspect the "Nips" are more genuine & honest Idea

Well, I see this one is still here.
