20-30 years from now, this is going to be hilarious to watch. I predict Korea will be a matriarchy by then.

The important figure to look at is third child male:female ratios.
It's closer to 150:100. If the first 2 are female guaranteed the third will be a boy. One of my housewife students told me she was pregnant and she was going to check if it was male/female. She openly said if it's a girl I'll have an abortion this afternoon.

Yesanman,

I think that's terrible your student would do that. Personally I have no problem with abortion if there is a legitimate reason for it. However, I think sex selection is a bit idiotic.

Essentially it's reinforcing the old Korean sterotype that boys are better then girls and that woman are baby factories. I'd be curious if she's being pressured by her parents or her in-laws about it.

What is terrible or idiotic about it? "Right to choose" is exactly that. If women have the right to choose to get abortions, they have the right to make that choice based on their own values. Who decides what is a "legitimate reason" for an abortion and how do they decide it? This is the slippery slope we have chosen.

Ajummacracy.

Can't be worse than what's going on north of Panmunjon.

I've heard the way the doctors get around telling a couple if the baby is a boy or girl is done like this:

If it's a boy: "That's a very handsome baby."

If it's a girl: "That's a very pretty baby."

Wow. I'm not surprised gender selection goes on, but it's just crazy that there's a common way for getting around the law.

Real reality, thanks for all of the info. Finally someone clarified for me about the legalities!

I agree in the right to choose, but I do think gender selection is a f***ed up reason for it. One of my students always talks about how her mom tells her she should marry and American man, because they're nicer than Korean men. I don't have anything against Korean men (most of them) but patriarchy is huge, and I can see where her mother is coming from.

I partially agree with this statement and the fact that it can b/c a "slippery slope" but to kill a child simply b/c the dad's male swimmers aren't fast enought? C'mon... Sad

Maybe you missed my point. I agree it is a poor reason to abort, but it is no poorer a reason than the other reasons people give to kill babies (the baby might not be perfect, don't have enough money, don't want mom and dad to find out, not ready to raise a child, don't like the guy who impregnated me, etc.) I find all those reason to be terrible and idiotic as well, but somehow we in the West have legitimized them and now we point fingers when people in the East want to abort for a reason we don't happen to like. Total hypocrisy.
