I think I, given that we're all up to speed around here on video cards etc., I'm stating the obvious, and I know everyone here already knows this but for anyone reading this who is new to monitor buying, I wanted to make sure that another import factor besides response time is mentioned:
Do not skimp and buy a monitor without DVI.
There are still lots of LCD monitors kicking around on the market with only RGB connectors. You want DVI.
Your pc is a digital creature, obviously. Your old-style CRT monitor is not. One of the things your video card did for you was convert the digital signal to analog for the monitor.
Then along came LCD. LCD is digital too, just like your pc.
That's what DVI is, Digital Video Input.
If you use DVI ports on your videocard and monitor you're shooting the digital signal directly to the monitor.
BUT, if you don't have DVI ports on your videocard and LCD monitor, then what happens is:
your video card converts the digital signal to analog, just to run up the 3-4' of cable where the LCD converts the analog signal back to digital.
So, it would seem incredible that any LCD would be made without DVI, but there are.
The thing is that this conversion is so fast that it doesn't really matter, it doesn't produce any noticeable lag- right now. But if you're going to have that monitor for at least 5, maybe even 10 years, this could very well make a difference in the future as pcs get faster, games get more complex, and video cards get better.
Another advantage with DVI is that this signal is perfect- you don't need to use all those monitor buttons to resize the image to fit the screen or move it left/right/up/down, or fiddle with brightness/contrast/colour etc.
At least that's the way I understand it.
I expect those more knowledgeable about monitors and graphics processing will correct any errors I've made. |

What you have said regarding DVI and the standard plugs is correct. Dude two days ago tried selling me the analog only 19". I was like:

Haven't seen you on in a while. With my new rig (currently loading FEAR as we speak), I'd love to slap you around a bit more. Let me know the next time you are on. |

Yeah, the server is always full and when I do occasionally get online the lag totally kills me. I've noticed players with distinctly Japanese sounding handles the last time I was there...
You've really got to go on some other servers out there and give the other games a try- slo-mo Team DM is so much better than plain old Team DM, and CTF and Domination (i.e. "control") are absolutely phenomenal in FEAR.
They definitely need to release more maps though, it's starting to get boring seeing the same old ones, and of course the pros already know every pixel, spawn point, and camping spot on the maps...
However, to be honest FEAR has reminded me about how good UT 2004 can be ("Bombing Run"! "Assault"! "Insta-gib"! now those are fun games!!!) and I've gone back to finishing some single-player ladder tournaments that I never got around to finishing before.
I also tried out HL2 deathmatch, and found it surprisingly weak, although it was cool to use the gravity gun to pick up stuff to frag with. |
