Make sure you get the hours you spend at a school fixed.
Some schools have it very vague in a contract so you are basicaly at the school all day. On your contract it says you start at 10:00am and finish at 8:00pm. That's way too long of a day unless you are getting paid over 3 million. Sure, you have breaks here and there but you really can't do anything in that time.
Usually, you should teach from 10:00am-630pm if you like the kindergarten kids or morning/afternoon shifts.
For afternoon/evening schedules you should look at a 2:00pm or 3:00pm starts and a 9:00pm or 10:00pm finishing time.
Any more than that and it's not a good contract..unless the pay is much more.
Also, with a roommate, I strongly recommend that you talk to the roomate for a good hour before you decide on the job. There's nothing worse than having a bad roommate and it'll make your year in Korea HELL! Living alone is the safest bet obviously but if you have to have a roommate, I'd want to talk to them for a good amount of time to see if we got along. My first job in Korea was in a 3-bedroom apartment with 2 other teachers. It was OK but then one of the girls went home and we got this crazy guy. I mean real crazy as in he broke things for no reason and when he had a nervous breakdown at school, they took him to the doctor and that's when we found out he was schizophrenic. I have a few other horror stories and know a few buddies that had bad experiences themselves. Really bad things like being physically assaulted and intimidated. One case I know where the female teacher was harassed by the guy she was living with. All stories from the victim not 3rd party.
They makesfor some good stories over a cold beer but at the time, it was a nightmare! |

| K...definitely frustrated now... I have been given some offers, but all of them have been pretty low pay (1.8, 1.9, 2.0) the 2.35 seemed really nice to me... I'm leaving a decent paying job to go to Korea, so I can't afford to work for 1.8...yay student loans... will I find something that pays well? I'm tempted to take this contract cause I haven't been offered any better pay... however, I have been told that I am job hunting too early and to wait a few more weeks ( I plan to go to Korea for the end of Sept/ start of Oct) Am I searchnig too early? Will I find something with good pay, considering I don't have alot of experience ( I have teaching experience, but only in the military... not ESL)? Thanks for all the great advice so far... |

I spoke with a recruiter and then the director of the school and then another Korean lady whose job I'm not sure of. Heres a copy of the contract...
Letter of Agreement
The Suji SLP Institute, the employer, under the license of SLP Corporation (hereinafter referred to as "the Institute") and the employee _____________(hereinafter referred to as "the Teacher") agree to a employment for a regular full-time English teaching position
Teacher contract are initially offered and signed on a ONE-YEAR base. Teachers are on a probationary status during the first three-months. The administration has the option to renew a contract.
If the employee fails to meet the expectations of the employer the contract may be terminated.
I would not accept this clause in my contract under any circumstances! If they dismiss you in a probationary period they don't have to give you an "Advance Notice of Dismissal." This is common knowledge, but this contractual language should never be written in any contract. It allows for them to dismiss you if you don't meet their "expectations." However, such contractual language doesn't conform with Labor Laws. Labor laws specifically state your employer has to have justifiable reasons to dismiss you. Justifiable reasons are gross negligence, violation of Korean Labor Laws, and serious violations. Not meeting an employers expectations doesn't meet the previously said criterium for dismissal.
Article 35 (Exception of Advance Notice of Dismissal) Labor Standards Act
5. a worker in a probationary period
Article 32 (Advance Notice of Dismissal)
(1) An employer shall give an advance notice to a worker at least thirty days before dismissal (including dismissal for managerial reasons).
1. The Teacher accepts employment from the Institute to teach English under the terms and conditions set forth here in this agreement for a period of twelve full and consecutive teaching sessions. Employment commences from the first day of teaching and finishes on the last teaching day of the last teaching session under the employment period in the agreement.
The employment period is from to (The first day of the first month session) to the last day of the final month session).
Employment commences upon issuance of E2 Visa from Korean Immigration Officials. There should be contractual language written in the contract stating, "The employee shall not work as well as partcipate in any work related activites until Korean Immigration Officials have issued him/her an E2 Visa." These law abiding hagwon owners would have you working on the first day without an E2 Visa.
The teachers daily working hours including preparation, class teaching, etc. are 8 hours. The Teacher will have at least 22 classes(80 minute) per teaching week. Monday through Friday are teaching days except for scheduled public holidays and vacation days.
Refer to Dan The Chainsawman's comments regarding 22 classes etc etc
No defined work hours!
No recess periods per Korean Labor Laws...
The Teacher is expected to devote no less than 2 hours a day at the Institute for lesson planning with co-teachers, student evaluations, reporting, consultation with parents, supervision of play, and maintenance of the English environment during breaks, workshops, and teachers meetings.
