These poor kids go to school all day and have tutors and other Institutes to attend, so when the occaisonal student falls asleep during class I let him or her catch a quick "cat nap" to revitalize themselves.....as only sleep will do.
They are smart enough to catch on when they wake up so no harm done. I even watch the door for the school Master to make sure I wake the student up before "boss" catches them.......
whats the big deal?
Stop power tripping teachers!!!

In spite of the watergun comment, I agree with you. When I taught in a hagwon, I understood that sometimes a kid needed to sleep. Maybe he'd been up all night with rowdy parents, studying for an important exam...whatever. Even with uni students, I give them ONE chance to sleep...especially 1st semester freshmen, who don't yet know how to balance their freedom with their responsibilites.

I do talk with the student who was sleeping and tell them: "That was your one chance...after this time, it's minus points." I've had very few "repeat offenders".

I am sure that the number #1 cause of student sleepiness is boredom. If heads are down the first step is to examine your lesson before seeking to embarrass a student awake.

If you got 4 hours of sleep last night, had nothing but ramyeon for sustenance all day, and had been studying for the past 10 hours, you think the reason you'd be tired is from a lack of thrill?

Yowza!!

Maybe I missed something in my high school physical education classes!

Yeah that's the dilemma I find myself in. I feel so sorry for these students, and would like to cut them some slack, but my boss has actually scolded me before for allowing students to merely sit with bad posture. The classrooms are walled with glass, so it's quite easy to look in, you see. At some point, I capitulated and accepted that this is the culture. The student won't begrudge you. S/he knows what's expected. It's just the way things are here.

I also use a water gun, it works great and is an alternative to physical abuse which i don't agree with

Yep me too and it is great amusement for the students. They now rat each other out to see a friend get zapped.

No sleeping in my class!

Do some teachers really carry around loaded water guns like a side arm? It`s true that while some students are just plain lazy, others really don*t have enough time to sleep. I find that having them stand at the back for 5 or 10 minutes when they just can*t stay awake works fairly well.

I used to carry one around in my pocket. The kids loved it. When I working at a hogwan there were cameras in the classroom. If a student even had her/his head down then the supervisor would be in the room yelling at the student. Then I would get yelled at later. The squirt gun became a fun way of dealing with the situation.

I would take their picture.

I made up a story about how taking pictures of sleeping students was my hobby... "your faces are so peaceful.. angelic. And sometimes, there's (mime the action) drool..."

Then at the end of the semester, when the typical dozen or so came to my office begging to pass... I'd have their picture on my wall at least 5 or 6 times....

Worked beautifully.

Simple. They leave the class and don't get their 'check for the day'. THAT freaks them out more than any embarrassment or juvenile punishment.

Then I have to assume you are teaching university students? Certainly I do not expect my own students in elementary and middle school to eat nothing but ramyeon and sleep 4 hours a night.

Laughing Laughing Laughing

Uni students have it easy compared to middle/high school students!! Ask your middle school students what time they go to bed and what time they wake up. It's an eye-opener!!
