I agree there is a rising hysteria. The quote above is EXACTLY what people used to say about Communism in the early years of the Cold War. It's my perception that the number of openly anti-Islam posters has increased dramatically here at Dave's. |
But, there really were commie spies. We leaked information like a sieve, but we had our spies in place there too. And the threat was very definite. One wrong move and we would all die. We knew who the commies were, the Russians, Chinese, Viet Cong and N. Koreans. We had a military and a face to go with the threat of Communism.
Now, while we didn't always know who the spies were, they weren't blowing up airliners and toppling buildings. They didn't directly attack our soil. There were the all-out wars such as the Korean and Vietnam wars, plus all the clandestine operations we participated in over the years, us being just as guilty as them, but no actual war between the Soviets and Us. It was always played out on smaller battlefields, with other countries serving as pawns in our global power struggle.
Now it's just open aggression. Muslim extremists have attacked us directly, so it's not the same as with the Cold War. If you had a Commie spy living next door to you, you really didn't have anything to worry about. He wasn't trying to kill you just because you weren't Russian or Chinese, he was there to steal secrets, spread a little disinformation if he could, maybe turn a few people to his cause. You didn't really have to fear him. With a Muslim next door, you might very well have to fear him. If he's a "spy" he's not there for state secrets, he's there to kill you or whoever he can and bend your society to the will of Islam.
