Sports-Drama. Well done and the end makes it all worth it.

Probably the most complete film I've seen since I've been here. The boxing sequences are fairly realistic and well-choreographed, but the movie doesn't rely on them too much. The end is pretty emotional, and pulls the viewer in two complete directions.

I saw a good Korean flick the other night. It's a cop movie, sort of a whodunnit, and quite stylishly put together. Can't remember the name, but this post will remind to me have a look when I get home.

I've been quite impressed with Korean comedies so far. I laughed my head off at "Beauty and the Beast" (민여 와 야수) and was pretty amused by a movie about a homely high school outcast called "See You After School" (sorry, can't remember the Korean name.) I'm a big fan of "아인 신부" (Child Bride) as well. (My apologies if the Korean spelling is wrong.)

The only Korean movies I really can't stand are the romances. I rarely watch romances in any language (other than Chinese-- those ones carve me up inside for some reason) because they're not too believable and extremely formulaic.

Korean romances can usually be summed up like this:
-Girl likes boy
-Girl stalks boy
-Boy treats girl like garbage
-Boy has a change of heart
-and sometimes, as a finale,
-Girl dies of terminal disease

Sometimes the girl/boy parts are interchanged, sometimes they BOTH have terminal diseases, but there's your basic plotline.

Yeah, I wasn't all that impressed with Sympathy, doesn't hold a candle to Old Boy in my opinion.

Sort of comic disneyfied Korean war story, rather sentimental/touching. As with all Korean films unless otherwise specified the 'actors' playing the roles of westerners are recruited off the streets and look clownishly bad.

The white acting was extremely bad. Oddly my gf didn't think so. To me, it stuck out like a big ugly sore thumb. The english dialog was unbelievable. Something like:

"When the paratroopers land the enemy will try to kill them violently."

I can't believe there wasn't one "actor" on the set with the balls to tell the director no one speaks like that. And do pilots have beards? It was my understanding pilots have to be clean shaven or at least have only a mustache as beards don't allow a firm seal with airmasks. Yeah it was fantasy but...

I think Korea, over all advice that maybe Old Boy should be tapped, offered this movie as its Oscar candidate. Oddly it didn't even get nominated, probably on the strength of the bad bad bad english acting.

I saw Old Boy for the first time very recently and the kindest I can say is that it was extremely disappointing.

The police whodunnit I bought was called 박수칠때떠나라 . I recognized the lead character from those cheesy shampoo adds involving strands of pearls and a melodramatic couple.
