Ventilation ears for a Kombi...bush mechanic styles.

I was making a trip through the Australian desert with some mates in an old Kombi, which of course couldn't handle the heat. We had broken down about 3 times already but kept going and ended up in a very isolated spot when it decided it was enough. The thing was overheating every kilometre or so.

Sitting in the oven that was the Kombi in the middle of a +40 degree day in the desert I got the idea to gather some long sticks and towels and secure them onto the ventilation openings so that they formed these big parachute ear/sail things sticking out the side to catch more air.

That in combination with propping open the rear engine door was enough to get us the remaining 1000 kilometres or so to the Eclipse Festival we were trying to get to and the 5000 kilometre journey home.

Not the most complicated thing I've ever made but one of the most elegant solutions to a problem I've come up with. Also some of the best results. The party and eclipse were both unforgettable.

Let's see....

Most technical project was a Rutan designed "Quickie" Q2 light aircraft.

Longest (time to finish) project was a 34' Wharram designed Tangaroa catamaran. Followed this with a transpacific sail in the early '90s.

Most fun project was building my first car from scrap parts back in high school "shop class".

Laughing Gotcha. I'll put that on my not-to-do list. Started thinking about 'There's Something About Mary'.

Yeah, that plus a few others and some memories of really good parties are all I have left to show from art school.
