Koreans are improvisors not inventors, that is true.

No. Improvisation means creativity. They're diligent mimics - they're excellent at identifying, copying and mastering the form of something. But they're not trained to invent or improvise. They can know, compare and apply information, but they're not so good at analyzing, synthesizing different pieces together to create new info, or evaluating it (Bloom's Taxonomy rocks.) This is why you get millions of university students out yelling stuff in the street that they have no idea what they're saying. They're not programmed to think critically.

One of my former adult students is a calligraphy master, with art shows in Insadong, teaches the art at a college, etc. According to her, the way someone is judged as being good depends on how close they're able to reproduce one of three forms. It's highly skilled, no question... but can an artist say, "I'm going to create a fourth form, my own...?" No way. Not permitted.

you guys have to take a comp sci 201, or a physics 303 and then you'll understand what i'm talking about.

and for all the extra classes asian students take, i don't ever recall a math hakwon.

Ok,
I admit the closest I've got to to comp sci or physics was via my computer geek ex who happened to have a MSc in nuclear physics. But as we've said over and over again. This is nation that is good at learning stuff by rote to pass tests, which is just one part of assessment (your right lemon, Bloom rocks!). The abilty to think criticlly about the world around them, to build on knowledge that they already know to cope with unknown situations etc. is rather poor.

AS for math hagwons, their springing up all over the place. Some hagwons now offer english/math/science/music/art. My director has that, and I know she's not alone.

Korean Students Tops at Science. A recent report showed that among the world's children at age 15, Korean students are in the leading group in math, science and reading scores, and excel especially at science.

This is probably true, I've seen some brilliant kids here. But with the exception of very few it all falls apart by the time they finish university, after which they tend to lag quite a bit behind other nations. Strange.

Ha! How is this different than the majority of university graduates that I read on this board. Wink

I disagree, and I don't think it is possible to TRAIN people to invent.
Where is the invention Masters Degree offered?
In my experience Korean people are very good at taking an idea and the task required to complete that idea and completing it more efficiently. They are very good at physics but they are not good architects. However, when you show them how to use their basic skills in an advanced form they will take your advice and construct your building in an extremely efficient manner.
Once you "spell it out" to a Korean person they'll construct your idea at least twice as fast as you would expect.
The improvisation is in the actual production.
