it wouldn't have been useful for him to have "died" right before the last presidential election?

Of course not! The Republicans got lots of votes from scared Americans worried about boogieman Bin Laden. The fear was that Kerry would be too soft on terrorism and that fear maximized benefitted Bush big time.

The tapes are old. And one audio tape is fabricated.

Bin Laden went from high profile guy, producing tons of tapes, even after 9/11, to suddenly quiet after the massive American bombings of his hilly hideouts. Then in the months that followed a tape came out claimed by the CIA to show Bin Laden is alive but independent European experts were consulted by the media, and their authenticity was considered very suspect. Osama has NOT said anything on any tape to indicate that the tapes had been made in the last four years. Sorry. It's a matter of faith and political spin to talk of him as "out there". Keep the faith bucheon bum, if you want. I'd say it's 70-95% certain he died well before now, depending on one's rational assessment.

They have had the same puppetmaster the last few years.

Yes, it's all very suspicious. I'd always have a feeling news of his death would come at a time the boogeyman isn't scaring the kids anymore.

Maybe. But, there's no way to know who's behind the leak. Because of what he represents, both sides would have reason to delay announcing his death. Apparently, the person who leaked the information about his death wasn't playing by the rules.

Someone who is actually in the US can maybe give me their thoughts on this...

Does the average American really attach a lot of importance to Osama bin laden, the man himself? That is, if OBL were killed or captured, would the average American think "well, I feel a lot safer now, guess the Republicans are really doing their job." I have to say, for me personally, the theory that OBL plays a significant role in the ability of Al Qaeda to function doesn't really hold up.

Plus, the Republicans have made such a godawful mess of things, I can't see the electorate just forgetting about all that simply because they've seen OBL's corpse on TV.

Not a little while ago, Bin Laden announced that he wouldn't be taken alive. If the Americans weren't getting close, than he was worried about someone backstabbing him.

Symbols are important. Its not going to end Islamo-terrorism, but there is humiliation in having this man evade us for so long.

Now, if we could only get Zawahiri...

But seriously, folks, it'll probably be some kid from Van Nuys.

yeah, don't want to sound like old school Bush (ie 2003-2005) and downplay OBL's importance, but seriously, it won't stop anything in the long run.

No, I don't think Americans would feel any safer. They would just have to read about Iraq and remember what's going on there. That being said, Bush's ratings and support would definitly go up if OBL was killed or captured. The rise would probably last no more than a month, but it might be significant enough to propell the GOP to victory.

Not that I believe in VI's idea. It is, frankly, dumb and illogical.
