--because most "teachers" here AREN'T capable of doing something else. Look at the thread about "Jobs had BEFORE coming to Korea" and you will notice that the vast majority of these jobs were low-paying entry level jobs. Even at that, a number of these "teachers" didn't last too long. If people could make more doing something else, they would be doing it.
Sure there may be a few people pretending to be idealistic souls who say "I'm in it for the kids." Okay, tell your boss, "if you pay my expenses, (food and utilities, etc) I'll do it for free." If anyone here does that, then I will believe them. |

I used to be a commercial diver and, if I stuck with it and got my sat-dive qualifications, I could be making around $1,000 U.S. a day. Even without sat-dives I'm qualified for bell-bounce and could be making $600 U.S. a day. Even doing neither of those, I could have continued doing what I was doing (inshore construction, repair, survey) and been making over $30 Cdn an hour plus living bonus plus wet pay. BUT, I didn't like that -- so, despite the fact that I could be making more doing something else, I'm not. |

That's because most ppl here are coming shortly after graduation so any job they have had was an entry level position. It's pretty hard to rise through the ranks if you've only worked for one to two years.

Does everyone like everyjob? no. If you don't like your first or second job out of university, I dont' think that means you can not make it. Your arguement is full of holes.

If a person can only last 2-3 days at a entry level job, I think that is a pretty good indication of his future career prospects. Just because we don't like a job after the first day, we should just drop it and do something else? That does seem to be a current mentality on here. Look at how many posters are saying they want to leave, even though they haven't been screwed over yet. They hear that people are working less hours, or doing privates, or working at a university, and then they want to do the same thing and come on here posting about how to get out of their job. |

I never said 2-3 days. I'm not sure that that is what is going on here either, but if that is your perception that is fine then.

This kind of person defineately needs to learn how to finish what they started. they signed the contract and should complete it. I do, however, not see a problem with asking how to get a better job, provided that they complete the contract that they are currently in. I have constantly moved up the ESL ladder in Korea, finished a contract and got a better job. I am currently in my 3rd year where I am and am ready to get a better job now. I've been talking to contacts and getting advice on how to best improve my resume. |

Seems like teaching ESL is one of the lowest paying jobs in korea. Can I ask why many choose to limit their options in this field if you're in it purely for the money? |
Um - my money wasn't low - I'm more of a consultant than a teacher - not limiting options - playing the game u ignoramus. Join the real world my dear. Get a grip.
The serious teachers will move on to greener pastures. Eventually.

Well, the constant bitching and moaning from members on this board about the pay sparked my posing of the initial question. Most don't even seem to enjoy their jobs...only in it for the money to pay back loans or get by day to day. Sorry if I offended you. I guess I should "keep it real" and join the ESL teaching community in Korea, right? |

No offence taken - I just wish peeps would get a grip on their finances for real. Sometimes this forum seems like a kindy rant - teachers included - it's not right - get a grip and stop grumbling. Earn your cash and leave.

I got the 2-3 days from the other thread about jobs had before coming to Korea. My perception as you call it is based in reality. Also I never said that a person should NOT ask how to get a better job. What I said was that they want to LEAVE the job they have now (even when there are no legitimate complains) for something better. They should finish the contract unless there are major problems. That is what I was talking about. Not sure what you are going on about. |

Teachers do make a lot of money, compared to Koreans. The average Korean per capita income is around US10 000 a year, we make 20 000++. There probably are better jobs in Korea, but you cant compete with Koreans for those positions. They go to people within someones social network, not to foriegners. |
