yeah, i realize the law & order bit is a bit much, but you get my point: rape and abuse is rampent throughout our society. I'd argue that the former is even less prevelant amongst muslim communities than other communities in North America.

BJWD,
Quote:
So, DD, you are saying that the History of the world demonstrates to you that there is more peace when ethnic groups mix? Really?

I am not saying this, looking at things historically. But unless you are blind, the world has changed dramatically the last 50 years. People travel vast distances, people mix, very few nations have any option of being homogenous, pure -- in any regard.

We will have to learn to live with each other, mix with each other and be tolerant and "culturally intelligent" and informed. If not, only idiocy and ill informed hatred.

Mixing is and will be the reality. The world has changed and people have to get with it.

Further, I think you mix up what Multiculturalism really is about. It isn't about, each doing its own. The message is the media. Meaning, multiculturalism is its own higher ideal and one which all mixing cultures believe in , sanction and attest to. That is the "share perspective" , to use your own words. Much like Indonesia, much like Canada. Sure, it takes the state to instill this belief of love, kindness and looking at the commonalities. BUT it works and will be needed throughout the world.

I liked happeningthing's words,

Quote:
Really, that common purpose is being in the work force, buying a home, providing for your family etc.

Really this is what most people want and what most immigrants do. If you believe otherwise, you have been eating lies....All the rest is just the insecurities of the home culture becoming hate and divisiveness.....it is backward, all the "go home" and " dehumanizing" other cultures. Insecurity.

Your world of the melting pot is only ethnosuperiority, a kind of cultural fascism. Come, do our dirty work but become what we are, believe what we do too....... Sorry, this will never work. People love their culture and roots and don't abandon it. At best, as in the U.S. , they hide their own cultural pride (and many studies atest that this is the result of much U.S. cultural policy), contain it, behind closed doors until their culture becomes large and strong enough to survive alone on its own.

So I suggest that we learn to live with each other and I also suggest that governments become more proactive in getting out this message of tolerance and respect for ethnic, religious differences......

DD

Sure, I can agree with much of that. I'm very much in favour of cultural mixing, or ethnic intermixing (I like with a woman of different ethnicity than mine).

But I will suggest to you that we must insist that certain "Western" values, such as respect for women, sexual minorities and cultural institutions that lead to open societies are respected by all cultures who live in the West. We must stop apologizing for the actions of 'brown' people just because of White Guilt.

I'll just get to my point. I'm a libertarian. I believe in 99% free movement of peoples for whatever reason they so desire. Just. Not. Muslims. In the same way I wouldn't want white supremacist to establish cities within cities in Canada I do not want another muslim to enter my country. Hindus, Buddhists, atheists, potheads and the like are A.Ok! Just no muslims. Their culture, NOT race and NOT ethnicity, but CULTURE is one that can only exist peacefully if it is dominant. Much like ours. We need to be realistic.

By the way, your culture facism remark was rude and dumb. I hope that I meet you one day. The one-balled internet wonder would be good for a laugh.

I bet you look like the comic-book dude from Simpsons.
