Ahhhh, now I see where they get some of their misconceptions. Please don't tell them they also have the world's best soccer team, we'll never hear the end of it. Wink

Also, in Japan is there more international variety than in Korea?

From my experience, yes. But I do live in a smaller city in Korea, and I don't make it up to Seoul very often so others may think differently.

For some reason a lot of Korean people express shock when they see me -a foreigner!- eating raw garlic or peppers, or whetever other 'too-hot-for foreigner' foods they offer. They often refuse to believe me, even get kind of insulted, when I say I've eaten hotter food in other countries. It seems to be an accepted 'scientific fact' in Korean publications that their food is the hottest in the world. This is even taught in schools. But if anything I find it pretty bland 9 times out of 10. Do any of you guys find it hot compared to some other Asian foods?

It can be spicy. But, the problem is that it's not a good spicy. From my first bite of kimchi, I could tell that Korean food had a different kind of spicy, and I don't really like it.

Well Korean is certainly spicier than any European or Middle Eastern food I've had. I personally haven't had much M.Eastern food though, so maybe i'm wrong. Its spicier than any Vietnamese food I've had, and most Thai food. On the other hand, I like those countries foods much more. They have more variety in taste than Korea. That's my big complaint about Korea: the lack of variety. Its either really spicy (with the same type of chili spice) or not spicy at all usually with a soy-based sauce/marinate. I really do enjoy korean food but it gets tiresome after awhile. My tastebuds yearn for something else.

Turkish is good huh? guess i'll have to check it out.

Favorite types of asian food:

1. Sichuan Chinese
2. Dim sum/cantonese
3. Thai
4. Vietnamese

Even though I've been to Malaysia, the only Malay food I had was mee goreng ie fried noodles, which I really liked. THe rest of the time I ate chinese for whatever reason.

I have to chime in, just because I love to eat. Heres my ranking...

1. Japanese (refined, creative, unique, beautiful, and of course delicious... I just wish it werent so pricey or Id eat it more often!)

2. French Vietnamese (amazing blend of east meets west)

3. Korean BBQ (deliciously marinated meats, cooking it yourself is half the fun! Plus kimchee, mmmmmmm... savor the flavor and get free burp tastes later!)

4. Indian (I love everything about this stuff, especially the breads!)

5. Turkish (some of my favorite flavors come from the middle east- when I lived in Germany all we ate was the Turkish food, cause German food is awful!)

and my LEAST favorite are...

1. Chinese (what is that red food coloring s**t they put in the pork, gag... not to mention you might as well just drink a bottle of sesame oil and puke up a fortune cookie. I love Chinese green tea though...

2. Thai (talk about UNORIGINAL! Its all the same four ingredients- peanut sauce, coconut milk, lime, and chile. And that smell! I can't even walk into a Thai restaurant without getting sick to my stomach.

each to their own but i find the Thais have loads of variety and a distinct 'cuisine' from malaysia or other neighboring countries (add kaffir lime leaves, coriander, black peppers to the list...) and especially good seafood. i've had some dishes that are way hotter and spicier than korean ("fried shit drunk"). korean bbq is pretty good, yes, but i think almost every culture in the world has bbq - so theirs is nothing special to me. i find korean veggies full of salty brine (stomach cancer capital of the world) and without flavor. i'm bored of this food now. it has become tiresome. cheers.

I need to jump in here to say that Korean food rocks! (my opinion)

Before I came to Korea, I really didn't eat much Asian fare. More italian, mexican, middle eastern/mediteranean, etc. Now, I eat a ton of asian, find it a bit more refreshing and healthy, although I still love the it all.

I agree that restaurants, if you don't know where to go, serve basically the same old stuff. I hate going out to lunch with my co-workers because its always the same.

What you need to do is to get some home-cooked Korean meals. Not the meals prepared "because you are a guest and foreigners like bulgogi" but the stuff that the family eats on a regular basis. Yes, you'll get the kimchis and other regulars, but you'll find many gems that you've never seen in a restaurant. Plus, home-cooked is a bit less salty, fresher, and seems more wholesome. (of course, depends on the home)

There are some great restaurants around, though. If you find them, you'll probably agree that the kimchi jjigae restaurant by your school is crap by comparison

maybe so, I can't really say that I am an expert because whenever I walk into a Thai restaurant the smell is very unappetizing. My old roomate had a girlfriend who was Thai and whenever she would come over and cook dinner, I would make a quick excuse and get out of there. She was very sweet, and I didn't want to insult her, but I literally get sick to my stomach.

That sucks. you live in Korea right? When its hot like right now I love Bebim Nang Myun...

Bottom line though, there is Japanese and Italian food, and then the rest. Nothing else comes close. In my opinion, that is.

There is a wide variety of Chinese food though. Yeah, basic cantonese food is pretty freaking greasy. Have you had dim sum though? Sichuan is more spicy than greasy as well.

yeah i've had some pretty good japanese stuff (but i wasn't thrilled by the raw sea urchins)...the japanese i know here tho'say that there are no true japanese eats joints in korea - they say it's fusion stuff. there used to be a great italian place in the koex mall (seoul) 'Bruschetta" that did a very good job. might still be there...know of any other authentic italian places here? (not the type that put bbq sauce on their pizza, tho' Crying or Very sad )

japanese food is great, italian food is great, korean food is ok, I dig the bread in indian restaurants, heck, even the sheep guts in scotland are pretty good. I like thai food, and as far as spicey goes, I've never ever ever had a dish hotter than my laotion friends' pappaya salad (don't confuse this with papaya salad they serve in restaurants) this is a laos side dish that fried the *beeb* out of my ex korean gf's mouth.

But I gotta vote for my favorite food which is the carnitas tacos you buy on the streets of tijuana, mexico. They are abso-*bleep*ing-delicious.

AND you get three for a dollar. Laughing Laughing Laughing
