It's gotta be some old, black blues or gospel singer no-one's ever heard of surely. Blues/ Gospel gave America, rock, folk and hip-hop.
Leadbelly? |

Well if we're going to go there, surely Robert Johnson has as good a claim as anyone? |

| Just re-read the pole.. I thought it was just a 'who do you prefer' kind of thing so I voted for Bruce. Don't know if he is the "Godfather" of whatever, but he is awesome, they both are. |

The question as posed is really strange.
My guess is that American music got started when the first backwoods Scotch-Irish preacher boinked his first slave woman and found heaven. At least for a few minutes. |

The "Boss" and "The Man in Black" are both good selections based on their popularity and critical acclaim over a long period of time. But they both remain in the shadow of the "King", Elvis Presley, the first white performer to greatly popularize a fusion of Country with Rock, R&B, Gospel and other Afro-American musical influences...
Of course, the late, great James Brown was the "Godfather" of soul...
In a more literal sense of the term "godfather", Frank Sinatra (with his Mafia ties and all...) certainly reigned for a long time as a pop/jazz singer, probably rivalled only by Tony Bennet.
In the pop classical field, the most internationally influential American composer, George Gershwin, was also influenced by jazz and blues.
As already mentioned, Ray Charles and Robert Johnson were American musical giants. I would also add Muddy Waters, Chuck Berry, Howling Wolf, BB King and Little Richard to the list of enduring Afro-American music legends steeped in the blues who majorly influenced Rock and Pop...
In the jazz field, John Coltrane and Miles Davis stand out as great, inspirational innovators. Davis was actually inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as testament to his crossover appeal.
The great Bob Dylan has been most dominant among American song-writers for decades, while Jimi Hendrix was the most dominant rock instrumentalist during a relatively brief but revolutionary period of American rock music...
Within the scope of this thread, I narrowly give the nod to Springsteen. Aside from the fact that I prefer Rock to Country, I think that he brings a lot of the original spirit of rock and roll - embodied by Elvis - to his live performances. His song-writing draws from the American folk tradition of Woody Guthrie, and the E-Street band he's long worked with is marked by a high level of musical competence and American-style diversity ... |

Yes Fly ...
A moving little tribute courtesy of his last producer RICK RUBIN.
Johnny Cash
American V: A Hundred Highways

I've just finished CASH ( the 96' Bio ).
A must read for ALL FANS
I fly a starship across the Universe divide
And when I reach the other side
I'll find a place to rest my spirit if I can
Perhaps I may become a highwayman again
Or I may simply be a single drop of rain
But I will remain
And I'll be back again, and again and again and again and again ... |

while a touching tribute.. you do realize that this song was originally written and performed by Trent Reznor on The Downward Spiral, yes? |
And the last link you provided brought more than a tear to my eyes. Damn you, I was in a jovial mood. |

Well, Sinatra would probably fit the title "Godfather" best as he had the mafia connections to do the title justice. Seriously though, I have to agree with Pink Freud....Louis Armstrong was the greatest and most influential. |

that was awesome...
I hurt myself today
to see if I still feel
I focus on the pain
the only thing that's real
the needle tears a hole
the old familiar sting
try to kill it all away
but I remember everything
what have I become?
my sweetest friend
everyone I know
goes away in the end
and you could have it all
my empire of dirt
I will let you down
I will make you hurt
I wear this crown of thorns
upon my liar's chair
full of broken thoughts
I cannot repair
beneath the stains of time
the feelings disappear
you are someone else
I am still right here
what have I become?
my sweetest friend
everyone I know
goes away in the end
and you could have it all
my empire of dirt
I will let you down
I will make you hurt
if I could start again
a million miles away
I would keep myself
I would find a way |
