Tumbleweed,
If you're a newb to Korea, don't make kneejerk reactions about the weather. It goes freezing as **** for one or two days and then quite mild for three or four after that. Notice yesterday was bloody chilly yet today is very temperate? Today's temperature is the one I'm used to. It's like today 70% of the time in England, with extremes of hot and cold comprising a tiny 10-20% of the year (and even then we're not talking 30c plus or -10c or less).
I know what Mith means though. I'm from the wettest part of England and I absolutely hate rainy days. July 2006 SUCKED! Rained constantly.
Generally though, it really doesn't take a special kinda person to adapt and thrive in Korea. It's a socially tame, reserved, SOFT society. Really, getting on with it, being happy, is precisely what we should be doing in such an unhostile environment, thus I do not take credit for it. It's too easy and sometimes that's a bad thing. Pity the pitiable, lamentable souls who can't get it together here....in Korean 한심한 사람들 the LOT of 'em! |

Happy, there's a new challenge every day, always more to learn and something else to understand.
Always something I should be doing but no pressure to really do it (like learning Korean or starting HapKiDo), so no stress.
Random surprises every day like this great cold tea I had at a Japanese place today, tasted like blueberries.
Life is what you make it, and it's pretty easy to make a decent life here if you can keep an open mind and a war chest of a few grand in case the job goes south.
There's bad isht too, but why bother focusing on it? |

I've found this to be true everywhere, everyday, which is why I'm generally happy everywhere, everyday. I'm happy here. |

Last winter was pretty tame I thought. Other than - say - 10 days that were intolerably cold, the on-off nature of the winter here made it plain-sailing for me. Most longer-timers and Koreans agreed that it was a milder-than-usual winter though.
Last winter (my first) on a freaking cold day, it'd be -10c in the morning, warm up to 0c from midday-2pm. There's a tiny-weeny bit of heat in that sun that makes a huge difference (it's mostly sunny in the winter, but does snow too). Lowest temperatures are -15c. |

Relatively warm compared to what I'd get back home, (-35C...equivalent to -50C with windchill) but seems somewhat colder -15 C normally is. I think it's because the skies aren't overcast and the ground isn't coverd in snow, so we loose more heat by radiation. |

-50c is life-threateningly cold, but in Korea I'm a total Winter guy. Put the ondol on, cuddle up with your bird in front of the telly - wonderful.
Summer disgusts me! All those mosquitos eating me, sweat, rain. You can't escape the heat, but at least with the cold you can protect yourself from it with clothing and a lovely pair of boots. |

| I like being back in Canada but having the ability to visit Korea once a year. 27 months was enough for me. Kudos to those who are enjoying their time instead of moaning about it. |

Mr. SPINOZA, do you really have no sympathy for the whiney folk? Yeah, in person they're annoying as hell, but can you not understand that some people have a terrible time here? I much prefer those who stick around for the whole year and biatch, than those selfish, spoiled, brats who up and leave thus screwing their co-workers.
Me, I'm quite happy now and Korea has some AWESOME points. But when people carry on with "korea whine, whine whine" I can completely see where they are coming from. I've managed to stay somewhat happy here just cuz I'm not sensitive like a lot of posters around, I realize you have to roll with the punches, and that in the end, this isn't our country. You just have to realize that some people are easily freaked out and can't deal with this place. As open-minded as the "apologists" claim to be, they do a really poor job understanding why peeps here are unhappy. |
