The dude was probably joking about buying your cousin but she nor her friends realized it.

1 male/3 chicks? dude, give me a break. I met a few women travelers while in egypt (one of whom I traveled with for a couple weeks, we somehow survived, god knows how Rolling Eyes) and beyond some rude comments, they didn't have any problems.

Bar fights? what the hell are you talking about? No single Egyptian women other than prostitutes hang out at bars so there is no "competition." If there are any bar fights, it is just because alcohol turns a lot of people into a-holes.

Foreigners are targeted? By beggars and touts, yes. By criminals? Umm yeah, ok.

Geez settle down bum, Im just giving warning and concern based on stories I heard from my cousin who visited, and a friend who happens to have lived there for the past 4 years.

Yeah maybe the guy was joking about buying my cousin but maybe he was serious, still doesnt say a lot about his character. I wasnt talking about egyptian women in bars, what I said is that FOREIGN MEN were seen as competition for the foreign women.

You can never be too careful. Is there some problem with me looking out for the safety of another fellow traveler?? I happen to believe in preparing for the worst but expecting the best.... Just because your trip was fine doesnt mean other travelers shouldnt take caution - which is all I am saying.... Sorry if that interfered with your view of what I should or should not talk about.

Don't be scared off, but did you check out the four pictures I linked, that'll give you a good idea of what to expect. Egypt is not so different from Libya or Algeria excepting the pyramids. Would you be nervous about taking a holiday into the Algerian interior? Damn straight you would. Just be prepared for what it's going to be like. I was there for three weeks and went from the Med to the Sudanese border, was definately much happier when with someone.

Between the religious fanatics and the theives-- and the humans, you'll be a whole lot wiser about people when you leave than when you got there.

The odds are remote, but be aware: http://www.usdivetravel.com/T-EgyptTerrorism.html

Going through Egypt will be one of the most awesome experiences you will ever have. (Take some time to stop at a cafe, collect yourself and reflect on the fact that you are going through some of the most important places in the History of the World, and on the amazing people who have been there before you.)

1. You didn't specify foreign women, hence my misunderstanding.
2. When you exagerate and have no personal experience it is a little irritating.
3. There are enough bad stereotypes of the Arab world out there.

Traveling alone in Egypt is not "very dangerous." Sure, I wouldn't suggest to a single female to walk around some quiet street at night, but I would be against that no matter what country a woman was in.

Algeria had a civil war for a decade. Of course one wouldn't feel safe in the Algerian interior. Now would you be nervous in the center of Libya? I certainly wouldn't.

While not an expert, I spent a little over 2 months in Egypt, another couple traveling elsewhere in the Arab world, and lived in Yemen for half a year. I also speak arabic.

So there you go.

seoulnpepe, sorry to hijack your thread like that. Egypt is quite an adventure. I strongly encourage you to check out Petra in Jordan if you have the time. It is well worth it. If you want any other tips, feel free to PM me.

Ive lived in Korea for coming up 2 years, yet I dont attack people who merely relate bad stories about Korea or its safety issues. I might give my opinion or tell people Korea is not as bad as a lot of people say, but I dont see reason to attack. S'all Im saying. People are entitled to their own experiences and opinions. Yours was good, well thats great, good for you. Other peoples are not. Terribly sorry if I struck a raw cord while merely giving examples of why SeoulnPepe should take caution.

Anyways, I too am sorry for hijacking your thread. Im sorry I cant offer more constructive advice than to exercise caution if you go there. Hope you have an awesome time wherever you go!

Safe travels!
