Oh, man...amps. You're taking us on a slippery slope. I've got half a dozen JAN Sylvania (in the box, 1971-1974) preamp tubes that I found on the net in Korea. Some guy was selling them for 6000 a piece. It totally changed my little Korean tube amp. I'm thinking about getting a Traynor tube amp whenever we move back home. You can't talk about amps without talking about pedals. I've got three basic ones that. An Ibanez tubecreamer (a bit of a waste of money if most of your playing is at home), a Behringer EQ (cheap and does the trick...a must), and this one:

Heh. I just picked up an Epiphone the other day. It makes my Gibsun With A "U" sound like farts.

I also found the Washburn I wanted, but it cost a month's salary. Shocked Sounded like god, though. If only I more than two months practice I could have really made it sing.

Hey guys, how much would a small amp cost me? Small cuz I don't have much room and shipping/ storage will be a pain in the ass.

Also: Flying with a guitar. Anyone know the rules?

Hem, I'll ask in the travel forum as well.

And that Epiphone sounds like a fart next to Swing or UNO's versions of the LP, which are only slightly more expensive than the Epiphone. Uno and Swing are probably the two best Korean mid-range electric guitar makers (forget about Samick and Cort, they don't even come close for the price).

Hey, what can I say? In my price range and a definite step up. Also, it fit my criteria of looking cool.

You could probably find a second-hand UNO or Swing for the price of a new Epiphone. Try it out, you'll thank me.

What sized amp are you looking for? A 10 to 20 watt practice amp will be more than enough to play at home, and even there, the practice amp could be miced through the PA system. Also, practice amps can be surprisingly loud. I got a couple of practice amps (they are cheap here, starting at about 30 000 won) and I rarely touch my fancy 20 watt practice amp (with a Celestion speaker and NOS tubes). It's just too good for it's own good. I'm sure my neighbors start cursing at me whenever I turn the volume knob past 4. My advice: get a second-hand practice amp, no more than 20 watts (10 is more than enough), and a cheap EQ pedal (which will greatly improve the sound quality).

as far as i know - you sign a waiver saying "if this thing gets messed up, the airline is not responsible".

and - when you land, get a setup and intonation done. the temperature/humidity changes and the jostling may throw it out.

Yeah, that's pretty much it. I mean, I can hear what I'm playing unplugged, but I can't HEAR it, if that means anything.

Cool, thanks. I'll go look into it with next January's paycheck. I've had a bit too much "holiday shopping" recently.

On the upside, buying my niece and nephew an iPod each has made me the greatest uncle ever.

I'm not saying the Epiphones are bad. For the price you pay for them in Korea, they are great and some of the pricier ones are excellent. One thing to watch, though, is that quality varies a lot, especially the frets. You'll have to try as many out as you can and make sure all the frets are level because that is probably the most common problem with Epiphones (you can find online some tips on how to check that out).

But, since you're in Korea, there are other excellent guitar for about the same price.

The UNO and Swing guitars are relatively cheap for quality instruments and easy to get by here. I think they are superior instruments to the Epiphones. They are just starting to breakout in North America. Check their websites.

http://www.unoguitar.com/ (they haven't been updating their site, so check this store...)
http://www.guitarplant.co.kr/shop/goodalign/good_align.php?refrefcd=1&refcatcd=83

http://www.swing-guitars.com/

(check here for the prices for new Swing guitars)

http://www.bedro.co.kr/

For the price of one of those guitars used in North America, you can get a new one in Korea. I recommend the Swing Classic 2, roughly 450 000 new and probably about the same price as an Epiphone second hand, and the UNO LP anything if end up with more cash than you expected (200000 to 300000 more than the Swing Classic 2). Some of their older models were fitted with Seymour Duncan pickups, the newer models have Tesla pickups (top of the line Korean made pickups).

Hah! You don't know how happy I am to read that. The E and A strings have a minor buzz around the fourth and fifth frets (not too bad) that I didn't hear when it was amped at the shop, and I was thinking that it was just due to my sucking.

Any ideas on where I can take it to get the frets sorted out?

PM Harpeau. He does some guitar repairs. If it's work he doesn't have the tools to do, he knows people who can help you out.

Two different friends of mine have Swing acoustics. They sound TERRIBLE if you ask me. But perhaps you're talkin' about electrics.

If I ever buy an electric guitar (again) it'll definately be a Tele. Those guitars ALWAYS sound like gangbusters!

I'm not a huge amp guy as the one (crapistic) strat I had was a mexican mini hunk of garbage and the amp was just useless. It was those two day that I realize that with the geetars, you almost always get what you pay for.

That telo looks nice but I gotta say I'm a big fan of the marshal amps...a buddy of mine (for the oddest reason) had this giGANTIC cabinet in his house. It was "very nice" playing through that.

Of course, I was talking about the electric. If you want a cheap but good accoustic, go for a Crafter.
