I've had ps2s for like 6 years, and I'm a tech junkie hooked on graphics, but I don't like playing games with a keyboard and mouse. And the PS2 looks like crap on a widescreen tv.

Also, to even get a 20gig hard drive, you have to pay 419 for a korean 360. Not even considering the other tech advantages (bluray, linux capability, not being a M$ product), that's only $100 less than the 20 gig ps3. I'll pay $100 for personal preference. I am pretty retardedly addicted to the Metal Gear series, and I have a PSP which is compatible in a boatload of ways. Other games I like aren't exclusive, but I've only played them on PS2, such as GTA and any sports game.

Basically, the only reasons I was considering switching to a 360 were Gears of War and a 1 year advantage of developers working with the hardware. But then I started watching HD trailers and reviews of games like Resistance and Motorstorm, and I know enough games will keep coming out this year alone to make it more fun for me.

I watched a pretty interesting discussion about all 3, and a notion that I remembered and can see happening was mentioned: eventually, when all of this launch hubbub is over, and it's just down to buying competing available game systems, the Wii will be the most popular 2nd console of a household, for those with two. Nintendo is still the innovator of things which will soon be copied by the other two, and while it's potential is very intriguing, it's core gameplay is still geared towards family entertainment--kids. I don't want to play tennis in the living room with my mom. The ever-growing group of 20-to 30-year-olds who play videogames care about things like graphics, mature storylines, and non-game functionality (dvd, online, connectivity/compatibility), and they don't have to ask their parents for the system for Christmas, because a few of them actually have jobs, so $500 for something more powerful than my $900 laptop isn't that unheard of.

All pretty valid points though the Blue Ray tech is really only a big deal if you got the HD tv to go with it. Otherwise its just larger storage. I am sticking with notion that 360 seems to have the edge on exclusive content with gears of war and halo 3 coming its way but if Metal Gear is what trips your trigger, go for it. It looks pretty sweet.

Well, it finally came in on Thursday, and it's Divisional Playoff Weekend in the NFL. So far, those two have led to me having an almost completely antisocial weekend. I think I'll have to go out and play a token game of pool tonight (Sunday) just to get some 'exercise' (because I didn't get a Wii). No, I'm not a lazy fatass. Yet.

It comes with a bluray version of Talladega Nights, which looks positively sexy as all hell on my LCD TV. Home theater buffs (there probably aren't many living temporarily in Korea, but still) should take advantage of the price of the PS3, because it is the cheapest player that displays in full 1080p HD.

My buddy and I completely wasted Saturday night playing the coop mode of Resistance. It's the only true FPS I've gotten into since Goldeneye. Playing Resistance online is flawless (and free): 40 people in a room, with no lag to speak of, and I'm in freakin' Korea. Now, maybe I have just had good luck in limited experience, but it's impressive regardless. With 15-20 people on each team, lesser players like myself can at times find a spot in a burnt out building and a sniper rifle (think that Jude Law movie) on the HUGE levels with no 'distance fog' and support more skilled teammates (and get loads of headshots).

I've downloaded about 10 small games and playable game demos, most impressive of which is easily Motorstorm. I'm tempted to go buy the Japanese version right now at Play-Asia, but hopefully I can hold out another month until the US version comes out, so I can play online.

Alright, now it's time to watch the Eagles/Saints game.

HOLY CRAP! Welcome to the playoffs, Reggie Bush. Watch ESPN, if they do "Jacked Up!" this week, that'll be number one. Completely decleated, 2nd play of the game.

Japanese PS3 is going for 750,000 won in Yongsan. Xbox 360 is 350,000. Is it twice as good?

Undoubtedly the PS3 is more powerful. It should be, it costs far more to make and to buy. But from what I've heard programmers aren't impressed with Sony's dev kits. John Carmak of Quake fame recently commented on this and complained about Sony's hardware not being developer friendly.

Take a picture of that PS3 on sale.

I was just there yesterday, looking for ANYTHING to do with the PS3. I was looking for an extra controller. I found a PC usb adapter for my ps2 controllers, so I'm happy. They were all saying March for PS3 here.

Also: Play-Asia is only 562,000 won

It was in a small shop in Nanjin arcade called Raymond's Game Shop. That Play-Asia price is without shipping though but its still pretty expensive.

If you want cutting edge games, a high-end PC is the only way to go. Direct X10 graphics cards are cutting edge. Neither the PS3 or the Xbox 360 are cutting edge at this point both contain technology which is a few years old.

I personally like consoles because a) I hate playing with keyboards and mice, b) I don't have to upgrade my system every 6 months to play a new game the way it was meant to be played, and c) even the most expensive one only costs $500, not $2G.

Even the newest computers on the market don't come with Bluray players. That technology is not (as far as the consumer is concerned) a few years old. Have fun putting one of those in your PC. The drive alone will cost you more than a PS3, sometimes by twice as much.

I have nothing against the 360, I was close to buying it, as I mentioned. In the end, I have no regrets, because I don't have wonder how much better it'd be had I spent the extra $100 for my personal preference. A high end PC isn't my cup of tea. The only thing I like about PC gaming is users being able to add to game environments with creatable content.

Blue-Ray is the main reason the PS3 was delayed so much and why the rest of the tech is lacking compared to recently released high-end PCs. I don't think there is much demand for Blue-Ray yet as DVD seems to be the dominant format for movies and games and is likely to remain so for a few years yet. Sony included it to boost the consumer electronics section of their company with the Playstation name. Besides the PS2 Sony have been doing badly lately due to their recalls of laptop batteries.

I accept your point about ease of use but a PC can be setup with a control pad very easily, you can use a 360 pad on the PC. I sometimes get frustrated with the lack of control over graphics on my 360, in Oblivion for example there are much less trees than on my PC version, running on a Geforce 6600 and a Pentium 4.

Can I buy Xbox 360 in Korea and then as I move around the world, I can use it and play games I bought in Korea/US/Japan/Europe?

Also does it support different voltages and video formats ? NTSC, PAL, HDMI, etc?

Basically I want to avoid buying console in Korea and then I am stuck with games for local market when I travel about.

Any advice?

360 games are region-coded, so you can only play Korean games on a Korean console. I'm not familiar with modding of next-gen consoles, but I wouldn't personally risk it on a system who's life-blood is the online game, and updates often render non-legit systems unusable online.

PS3 is open-region for games Smile.

I see.....because my idea is to get the console, then if I go for a visit to US if I buy something I want to play it back here in Korea.
And if I move to Japan I wanna be able to play games there....seems more difficult than it seems....

Aren't some 360 games open region though? Usually play asia has a blurb by them about regions. I thought it was dependent on the game maker or some such thing. I could be very wrong though.

Yes some X-box 360 games are region free. I went with a friend this past weekend to get his at Yongsan, wrote about this in another thread. Anyway he downloaded and burned two that were region free, Lost Planet and Rainbow Six Las Vegas. Depends on the maker I guess.........

Wrong.

Asian consoles are all from the NTSC-J region which means Japan, Korea and China all share the same region. So you can play Japanese games on a Korea console and vice-versa. Just check on Play-Asia for all the details. And yes many 360 games are region free. Its up to the publisher. Ubi-Soft doesn't region code any of its release and most Microsoft published games are also region-free such as Gears of War.

NTSC-U/C implies domestic US & Canadian systems, NTSC-J implies domestic Japanese, Asian or Korean systems and PAL implies domestic European or Australian systems.

yeah I looked into that a bit more last night. Seems that it may be an ADVANTAGE to have a Asian or Japanese 360 because it seems more of the Japanese only titles are the ones being regioned where as most American ones are not. Nice.

A Korean Gears of War disc will play on a US system? I heard that the opposite was true, but I haven't seen anyone verify that the Korean disc will work on a US system yet. The list just has a question mark.
