| For an overnight trip, I say Halong bay. The place is stunning and you can do a night on the boat (good times) and a day/night on Cat Ba island (a nice beach). There are handfuls of tour operators in the old quarter, as long as you feel comfortable with your choice (be very clear as per what you want and expect) you will do fine. If you dont mind flying Danang is a great place for a few days. Sapais also highly recommended as a trip from Hanoi. |

OK, so Hanoi it is for me then.
Now, does anyone have any suggestions for good places to stay (with links), restaurants, day or overnight trips (maybe a beach), how to get tehre, you know all that stuff...
Also, who has a Vietnam LP to sell me? |
well... you could read back through some of our Vietnam entries on our recent SEATour
We visited Saigon (Mekong Delta), Dalat, Hoi An, Hanoi (Ha Long Bay, Tam Coc) and out of all those I would have stayed in Dalat more than any other place. CHeck out the blog and the pics and pm if you want more details. |

| It looks like we will arrive on the day of TET (vietnamese new year). How will this affect our travels? Will everything be closed or what? |

| Being there for TET could be a positive, but I have some friends who went at this time last year and weren't happy with many things. They said many tourist attractions (museums, ect...) were closed and that the budget tours to many places were booked up, along with decent budget accomodation. I would book accomodations well ahead of time and I would also consider going to more out of the way place such as Danang over Hanoi. |

But from what I've read, it's quite cold in Hanoi this time of year. Like 10 degrees or so (uh... celsius, obviously). Ho Chi Minh is in the upper 20s now.
Just mentioning it, in case it's a factor for you! I really want to go to Vietnam, and Hanoi does seem way more rad, but I'm going to wait until it's warmer. |
I was in Hanoi for Tet about two years ago (this time of the year). It was cool and rainy, but nice. If you are going during Tet, get reservations for a room. I thought it was quite lovely, but my travel companion was too cold. It is a matter of taste, I guess. I was happy to not be sweating, as is the case in Saigon. |

| My brother was in HMC during Tet back in 2004. He said that if he was not visiting friends it would have been difficult. Travel becomes an even greater obstacle throughout the country and many things are closed. On the other hand, he also said the city was quiet and peaceful for the only time during his visit. Dont know about Hanoi. |

| How long are things closed for during Tet? We arrive on the day of and then are there for the next week. Is it just for the actual day that things will be shut down or for much longer? |
