Maybe the European - SPain forum would be the best place to ask about Barcelona?

I did that, no responses. The place looked dead.

Just stay in your hotel and drink beer and watch TV.

Just spent five days there.........not near enough time to really enjoy the city and area. It's fabulous. Go to any web site about tourism in Barcelona.......lots of activities and sites found on all of them.

Good that you're going to Barca =). I used to live in Spain, and loved it.

Do watch out for the theives there. They smell easy prey (Americans/Canadians) especially in Las Ramblas. I went there with some American friends I had just met, and we were chillin near the Colombus statue (You'll know which one), and these arabs came by and were throwing a fast one. Luckily we caught it on time and they weren't able to nick anything from us.

There's a nice port off of las Ramblas which has clubs and bars. You're gonna have fun for a few days.

Here's a question for Canadians: Why do you feel the urge to have a backpack/baseball cap/ sweatshirt that has a big Canadian flag on it? I mean, I understand for pride reasons, but you are so easy prey for thieves and beggars.

Lol, imagine Americans proudly displaying their flag, they're gonna get their butts kicked =O

To answer your question...well, it's sort of an answer. After having some old Spanish guy ranting and raving at me for over an hour on a bus trip....
he screamed on and on about Iraq, war for oil, bombings in Spain, Americanos, etc etc. I wanted to tell the guy that I was Canadian, but I couldn't see who he was. I was up near the front and he was somewhere at the back. I thought about standing up and showing may Canadian passport, but then I thought he would probably think it was a fake or something. I thought it would just blow over, but the guy got louder and louder and after a while it seemed like at least half the bus was ready to tar and feather me. Finally a German lady came and talked to me, and then spoke to some of them and things calmed down. Confused

After going through that, I can easily see why people would wear Canadian flags and stuff. Confused

As for things to do in Barcelona.... don't miss the colored fountain show.

I don't know how often it is done, maybe only on weekends, but it is definitely worth watching. I scoffed when I first heard about it, but some friends dragged me to it....and I was pleasantly amazed.

When are you going? It's still pretty cold there I'm sure, I think March or April are probably the best times to go.

LA RAMBLA is the place to go in Barcelona.. at one end it reaches a really nice beach.. gorgeous place to hangout in the summer. La Rambla is good day and night.

For museums and architecure and all the other cool stuff.. all the guide books talk about these things much more extensively than anyone could on a post.

As far as anti-american sentiment in Spain.. I'm an American who lived in Spain for most of 2004.. didn't have any problems at all being an American anywhere in Spain.

Have a great time, Barcelona is fantastic. Do be very careful though - the area to the west of Las Ramblas (I think it is called EL Raval) is very dodgy - not the place to wear your designer watch.

Does anyone know if they still do son et lumiere with the fountains near Montjuic (Placa d'Espana) on Friday evenings?

Is there a lot of hotels/hostels back in a maze of an area?

I left my hostel to buy a tube of toothpaste.. stuffed it in a paperbag in my front jacket pocket.. had some weirdo jump in my face yelling something weird as he swiped it from my pocket.
