No, not "free" but "free*"
the small print reads that you get 200 mins per week (just over three hours right) and then you have to pay normal rates which is a pretty good deal.
Skype have just started offering free calls to UK landlines though so the battle is on... |

I loaded the skype software and tried to buy skype credit time for skypeout. I use my visa card but I have that darn "verified by visa" protection and it doesn't seem to allow my transactions from Korea (or some such reason).
Has anyone else had problems buying the skypeout time? Anyone have a good successful method to buy the time? I saw someone mention using paypal. I never had a paypal account, not sure if it is worth it just for this.
Thanks, |

For that verified by visa,
Did you use Internet explorer, or firefox. Did you have to do anything special to your antivirus software. Anything special to the cookies or java script (above what they say to do on their website?). I have tried everything, even two computers. When I enter my pin and click Submit (Or OK, whatever), then I get the message 'error on page' and nothing happens. Spent 3 hours on this darn problem.
Was there something special you did to get verified by visa to work on that skype site?
Thanks, |

PayPal is a free account, make it easy on yourself
also, maybe you need to tell your credit card issuer that you are living abroad, if you're having trouble using it.. sometimes they may block international stuff (each place may have different rules) |

........as long as you buy a 10 SkypeOut credit.
So not completely "free", but a good deal if you will be making more than 10 worth of calls to UK landlines over the next six months. |

Didnt do anything special. I have used firefox and IE in the past. I usually just go to the website, but have done it through the program with no problems as well. Are you sure that you are using your right password. If you mess up ones.. you have to wait 24hrs or it wont work. |

| Just tried that lowratevoip and i was able to call mobile phones and send txt messages to korea (I am in New zealand) for free on the net did not have to buy credit or anything. It's great, not as user friendly as skype (which i will continue to use for computer to computer). |

| Ok, skype actually has BETTER voice quality then a landline if you have the bandwidth, equipment and processing power to run skype. And no I am not paid by Skype. You can buy a Korean or American skype phone number for an entire year and make and recieve phone calls on your computer for a pretty decent 36 dollars a year. They used to charge about 15 dollars but they have raised their rates. I think Skype rocks |

this is simply not true.. you can NOT buy a Korean Skype phone number
as for that, I don't know what kind of special "equipment and processing power" you would need.. it's a tiny little program |

It's free unless you're a p*ssy and need to call your mommy more than once a week for a few minutes.
If you have some sort of long-distance relationship you're also a p*ssy. Give up now. She's cheating on you. |

Here's what's WRONG with SkypeOUT:
1. inability to use a credit card from a Korean ISP despite the credit card account and company being based in N. America.
2. having to set up and use a paypal account; third party billing is just inviting possible fraud and future headaches. The internet is riddled with complaints about paypal, not to mention they were sued five years ago.
3. six month time limit on purchased minutes; after the expiration date you lose the balance.
4. frequent technical problems calling the US, including speech delays, disconnects, and the other party not being able to hear you. (And, no there's nothing wrong with my high speed internet service, my computer's processing speed, antivirus software, or RAM.)
5. In the event of a problem THERE'S NO CUSTOMER SERVICE FROM EITHER PAYPAL OR SKPE!
Sorry, op, but you sound like a shill for Skype. Just wait until you have problems with them, which is only a matter of time.
SkypeOUT may be cheap, but there are other costs attached when problems, such as erroneous billing and technical difficulties arise. How much is your time worth? |
I've used eBay since 1999, have a 100% postive feedback rating and have not had 1 problem with Paypal.
Listen Purple_Buddha. The calls to the US are only pennies a minute. You know, that saves me money. I've been using it for 3 months now. I get an occasional disconnect, but thats no different from Cell Phones. Quit trolling on this thread. I was recommending a form of communication to the US that is cost effective.
Instead of typing whats "WRONG" with skypeOUT, why don't you do something constructive like offer alternatives. |
